Borovets Medical facilities

My family and I are skiing in Borovets in February. I have heard that medical facilities in Bulgaria are very poor - does anyone have any good or bad stories of skiing accident care

Hi Ian
As a nurse I am taking a basic first aid kit with me. This is probably best for you as well if you are taking a young family with you.

Never needed any treatmen, but from what I've seen the y seem to be efficiant, and seeing as it is a tourist hotspot it'll probably be better than average

I've been to Borvets every year for the last 5 years. The first year I went I gashed my leg and needed stiches (don't ask how). The medical centre was first class, very clean, everything was steralised and my stitches were very well done. I went back every morning for the remainder of the trip to have my bandage changed and wound cleaned. They even took care of the insurance documents for me. A really first class service.

Samokov hotel even has its own doctors and dentist!
I knew one elderly lady at the hotel who took ill, medical help was first class again.

Don't know about the winter resorts but in Sunny Beach the medical centre is very good but if you have a major accident and need the main hospital in Bourgas, forget it!!!

My son spent 7 days there last year and the staff were terrific but the facilities were sadly lacking - they run out of antibiotics, we had to hold the z-ray plates while they did the x-rays, they had to go to a clinic for a CT scan as none in hospital. Poor hygiene, no bathroom or shower facilities etc.

Also a language problem, not geared up for english tourists. Hopefully now the big tour operators are on board things will improve.

Just make sure your insurance cover is the best you can have, and read the small print.

re: Borovets Medical facilities

Bulgaria may be a bit back in some respects but as far as the medical facilities/looking after you, they appear better than most Spanish/Greek?Turkish etc resorts!
