Borovets Report

Back home after a really great week in Borovets.

Went with Thomson Holidays from Bristol on 25th Feb to 4th March and stayed at the Samokov Hotel. Group of 11 of us, 4 adults, 4 teens and 3 around 10ish.

Arrived bang on time and straight up to the hotel in around an hour and 15 mins. Our rep (Natalie) was informative and helpful.

Checked in and were surprised by how good the hotel was in terms of facilities. The kids loved the shooting, swimming, ping pong, pool and bowling.. all of which were cheap (or free!).

The rooms were average. Hard beds, awful pillows, German TV! but clean, well looked after and quiet enough for a big hotel. Bathroom was odd though, no sealant round the bath???? so wet floors a problem. Luckily loo is seperate room so not too bad. Tons of storage space and balcony to get the first blast of cold air in the mornings!!!

Food in the hotel was OK. Better than expected, hotter that expected after reading previous reviews and when you think how cheap it is I think it was great value for money. Breakfasts had plenty and always at least 3 choices for dinner plus salads and other choices. Most nights they also provided live music... of a sort! All in all we were all very satisfied.

The skiing was good. We did the ski school at the hotel and found the boot room staff quite nice to deal with. Our instructor (George) was funny and did his best to teach our intermediate group but, to be honest, we found him a good guide but didn't learn much. Could have just been us I guess!

We went off on our own a good deal and really enjoyed that. We did most of the red and some of the black runs but be careful of the ice!

The final night instructors party was fun though, wine, beer and soft drinks provided.

If I have a critism it would be the overcrowding of pistes as the gondola was closed for half the week. This led to boarders scaping off all the fresh powder on the limited runs available leading to icy slopes and huge queues on the chair lifts (we actually gave up on the last day).

On the days the gondola opened it was brilliant and opened up at least 50% of the pistes, therefore spreading the crowds.

We ate and drank out only a little as we were (a) knackered and (b) lazy! so can't report on that too much. However, we did go bum boarding on the Rila hill twice. Great fun and sore ass!

Did a smelly horse and cart trip which was OK. £10 for a good hour for 3 of us. Not much to see but relaxing.

Good Points
Cheap
Close to everything
Great for kids
Ski in/out (most of the time)
Picturesque
Friendly
Hot Chocoloate made from Lindt chocolate.. hmmmmm

Bad Points
Too hot in the hotel
Gondola closed half the week
Crowded when gondola closed

All in all a VERY good value for money holiday enjoyed by all of us of all ages. Compared with France we could go to Boro 3 times for the same money.

Finally, to Julia, Andy, Kat, Mark, Charlotte and Alex in our Ski School, it was great to meet you

We will be back next year.... :-)

Hi,
Had a great time in Borovets, although it was a lengthy travel time owing to a 12hour delay at East Mid airport! We arrived at our Hotel Bor, it was very clean, and quite upmarket I thought, as I was expecting basic rooms. Ours was very comfortable, lovely soft beds and pillows, tv, plenty of room for the 2 of us. Extremely good decor, very quiet, boiling hot water all the time, fresh bedding and towels everyday, and left nice and clean by maids etc. Friendly staff, very helpful, a good ...

Ours was very comfortable, lovely soft beds and pillows, tv, plenty of room for the 2 of us. Extremely good decor, very quiet, boiling hot water all the time, fresh bedding and towels everyday, and left nice and clean by maids etc. Friendly staff, very helpful, a good choice of food and always hot, excellent soups, but nothing spicy, so try a night out at macemitas mexican food if your missing that, good price and large helpings, also good live music. Try the Happy Duck, excellent atmosphere, good music, the live band we saw were great, 2 guys one on guitar and one on keyboards. Great snowing conditions, although high winds shut the gondola on occasions, it didn't affect our skiing, we managed to bypass it most of week. Get down to Yatrbets slopes, lovely long pistes. Do not worry about peoples saying luke warm food and expensive. It wasn't at all any of the bad things we read.
