My friend and I have just arrived back from a week in Borovets and think the place has a lot to offer. However, be prepared to expect extensive amounts of tack and sleaze when you get there. Like anywhere the place has good points and bad points although I’m sorry to say probably more bad than good! Though it depends on what you like/dislike! I would definitely consider going again for a cheap skiing holiday.

My friend and I have just arrived back from a week in Borovets and think the place has a lot to offer. However, be prepared to expect extensive amounts of tack and sleaze when you get there. Like anywhere the place has good points and bad points although I’m sorry to say probably more bad than good! Though it depends on what you like/dislike! I would definitely consider going again for a cheap skiing holiday.
The bad points:
Too much tack everywhere; snide clothes, watches, sunglasses, perfumes etc… There was nothing worth buying in my opinion apart from the copied CD’s and dvds – at 10 lev and 25 lev (4 quid and 10 quid) each. Got a few of them! We even went to Sofia for the day and still didn’t see anything worth buying there apart from CD’s, O and a Big Mac and fries!
Prostitutes in the one of the big hotels (not mentioning names!) – A bit disgraceful in my opinion with all the families around! It seemed obvious that the Hotel Management were turning a blind eye to all of this. On the first night my mate and I counted at least 15 in the bar/reception area. We weren’t tempted (honest!).
Street Bar and restaurant staff – constant mithering you to enter their bar or restaurant! Became bit of a pain after a while!
Coach and especially taxi drivers – drive too fast in bad conditions and overtaking frightens the life out of you!
Constant stench of fag smoke in the hotel reception bar. OK I suppose if you like passive smoking!
Fireworks and bangers being thrown in the streets and even off Hotel balconies onto street. Well we were there on NYE. Though saying that fireworks and bangers were going off all the time we were there! VERY dangerous if you’re there with Children!
Erotic bars were too expensive (even for Bulgaria) in my opinion. I’ve been to a few back home and usually pay around 10 quid a dance. In Borovets it was about the same or even slightly dearer!
Ski runs – not enough runs and lifts in my opinion. The queue for the gondola was about 20 minutes last week!
Credit Cards – no one would accept in Borovets! Hard cash only!
Transfer from Burges to Borovets took over 7 hours on a cold and knackered old bus! We were supposed to fly to Sofia! At least the return journey we were able to fly home from Sofia but our coach arrived at the airport 3 hours before flight departure and the flight was then delayed 1 hour – 4 more hours wasted! Everyone thought at least they could do some duty free shopping but guess what, you couldn’t use your credit cards! Also to confuse matters, everything was priced in Euros only and so you had to convert your spare cash from levs to euro to pounds to know what you were paying! Remember to take your calculators if you’re travelling from Sofia.
Taxis – if you want one then expect a rusty yellow Lada and put your seat belt on (if available) coz you’ll need it.

We stayed in the hotel Mura (just downhill from Samakov hotel) and we didn't see any women of the night in there! Although it doesn't look like it has been refurbished since the communist era.20 mins for the lifts? On the Friday it was around 1hour - then you had to wait for all the lifts at the top of the gondola!!
Our bus driver allowed everyone to overtake him on the way from Burgas - then decided to overtake them all back once we were on the mountain road to Borovets - nutter!!!
