Bulgaria Ski discussion board

I was lucky enough to squeeze in a day's skiing at Borovetz on Monday 15th. Weather was just superb, no wind etc. Only problem is that snow was melting very fast. Afternoon skiing was nearly impossible as the white stuff was sticky as hell. The red run leading back to the Gondola/ticketing building, was a challenge in itself as most of the snow was pure soup on its lower parts.
Anyway. I had booked a room for the night at the Rila and my Bulgarian friends came too. The hotel charged about 50 Euros for the 2 Bulgarians in one room and 70 for me on my own (7th floor, nice rooms)!! that included breakfast.

However, I got my own back when I hired the skis/boots for the day. Instead of renting from the hotel, I rented from a little sport shop just round the corner, left from the exit of the covered mall leading out of the Rila. The man spoke good English and was very helpful. He quoted only one price (not that double pricing c... for Bulgarians and foreign tourists) 20 Leva per day! The tuition prices were cheaper too (the owner of this shop also own the Alpin hotel up the road).
So there is no need to be held hostage by paying these high prices. Just book your package independently and enjoy the savings.
As for food, we went to a very small eating place just across the Bulgarian Olympic medalist ski school. The cauldron of soup was cooking on the wood fire outside. Although very small inside (they have 2 eating rooms), I found the food especially good and hot (kind of mix grill and chips). The red wine was the best, "Mavrout" year 2000 was just what the doctor'd ordered. A good meal with starters, main course and wine for 3 for 50 Euros with tip. Well that's all I had to say. Cheers.
