Borovets gondola closed a lot? Plus general questions ...

From reading the reports on here it seems that the Borovets gondola is closed quite a lot? Is this right? Is there any other way up to the top apart from the gondola?

Would I perhaps be better going to Pamporovo or Bansko? Do they have the same problem?

We are a couple in our 30's, early intermediate skiier and snowboarder. I personally prefer gentle cruising runs to steep runs.

Any help gratefully received.

Thanks!

re: Borovets gondola closed a lot? Plus general questions ...

The Gondola will shut if the weather is poor for safety reasons. Last year it closed because it was so cold up the top that it would have been irresponsible to let skiiers up. If I remember rightly it was -50C with the wind chill brrrrrrrrrrrr!

It also closes when it is very windy. In 2003 this happened to us and everyone then went up the one man chair lift which next season will be a 4 man lift. I think there were more difficulties last year because the 1 man lift was out of action ...

It also closes when it is very windy. In 2003 this happened to us and everyone then went up the one man chair lift which next season will be a 4 man lift. I think there were more difficulties last year because the 1 man lift was out of action and therefore the options when the gondola was closed were very limited.

Assuming that both the 4 mnn lifts are open then the gondola shutting for safety reasons shouldn't cause too many problems. Of our 14 days in Borovets over 2 years the Gondola has only been shut for 1 morning.

Watch this space as they say!

Hope this helps

Hi Ellie, thanks for your reply ....

Just a quick question - when you say "next season" for the 4 man chairlift, do you mean e.g. January 2005 (which is when I want to go!)?

Thanks!

Hi hannah

Obviously I am not ellie but the four man chair lift is supposed to be open this coming season. So yes it will be open for you in January. I went to Borovets last january and the gondola was only closed on one afternoon, this was due to high winds and snow.

Hope this helps.

Have fun

Sam

re: Borovets gondola closed a lot? Plus general questions ...

I skiied in Borovets in March 2003 and am going back again in February. The gondola was closed one morning as it was too windy up top.

Let's think - nice warm gondola - stops for 5 mins due to power surge / delay getting people on or freezing cold chair lift.... hum... that's a difficult one. I got left hanging on the chairlifts in Pamps so many times last year would much rather be in the gondola.

It looks like that four man chair will be up and running in time for the coming season ...

You were very lucky. I had 6 days skiing in Borovets last season and the gondola was closed for 3 of them. Personally, I would never return to Borovets. I would, however, go back to Pamps. Much better resort and 10x better skiing and runs, especially if you like gentle, long runs.

Rich

As I said last season was unfortunate when the gondola was out of action as the other main lift was closed all season.

Hannah - sorry to have been misleading - yes I did mean the forthcoming 2004/05 season. From what has been posted on here I understand everything will be in place for the new season. All you need now is some snow Wink
