Borovets/Rila

One week in Borovets at the Rila (hotel) -- mixed group --experienced (skied Swiss/French/Austrian/US/Canadian) and not - all enjoyed it

Skiing and hotel just fine --

Ski - mix of runs with less black than some but some good long testing reds - and great blues/reds at top of Rila (mountain) --- in my opinion a lot of people ask for black runs but can't really ski them -- just get down them somehow.

Lifts - only queue probs on Weds/Thurs/Fri at about 9.45-11.30 when all the ski ...

Ski - mix of runs with less black than some but some good long testing reds - and great blues/reds at top of Rila (mountain) --- in my opinion a lot of people ask for black runs but can't really ski them -- just get down them somehow.

Lifts - only queue probs on Weds/Thurs/Fri at about 9.45-11.30 when all the ski schools head for bottom of Mt Rila gondola - so get there at 9.15

Snow - was excellent - couple of cm extra at top most nights last week -- on top of a very thick base - slightly mushy on some lower slopes in afternoon, but little ice, or stoney patches -- well piste-bashed every night.

Sun - most days

Poor piste marking and maps -- if you're heading down mt Rila and want to avoid the black make sure you ask your way.

Ski instructors -- ours were v. good

Equipment -- fine

Biggest safety issue is ice on streets in town --they should have gritted it

Hotel -- good and good choice Bulgarian/European food (especially good for veggies, but plenty of meat dishes) however if you just want British breakfast and steak/chips then eat out or ski Scotland. Swim pool -- great.

Locals/Bulgarians -- v friendly, helpful if you are friendly/respectful.

Dogs in street -- yes but no prob

Beggars - ditto - not aggressive -- one helped a drunk tourist right back to hotel -- no advantage taken

Girly bars etc -- not as trashy as reported except for one pink fibreglass backside over main drag -- you won't miss it.

have a good time

re: Borovets/Rila

As bulgaria is such a poor country, they can cannot actually afford Rock Salt (aka grit) and they must use sand, which is not nearly as good
