British Airways Important Info

I have just come back from a trip to Boro. I fly with BA because over the years taking my boarding equipment is free and no problems. I was shocked when checking in to be told that my board couldn't go for free as usual for 2 reasons.
1. I hadn't booked my boarding equipment in when I booked the ticket.
2. My wheeled board bag was over 160cm long (which they nearly all are).
It appears they have changed their policy on equipment in November.

I was told the board would have to fly as cargo but as I hadn't booked it in it couldn't go today.
Luckily a very helpful member of staff went off to see if anything could be done. Thankfully they said this time they would take it but in future I would have to abide by the new rules.

I didnt have the time to ask what the cost would be to take the board by cargo but I bet it ain't cheap.

If you are flying with BA check the new rules and make sure you can get your gear on for free or you might have an expensive suprise or even worse having to leave your gear behind.

They say the new rules are to comply with the regulations in the new terminal 5 which is opening next year. Nothing to do with extra income generated as most peoples board bags are over 160cm long.

By the way the snow in Boro was fab. If you are going for Christmas or New Year you will have no probs. Even the Moussala Pathway is crammed with snow right down to the bottom.

Paul,
If they did not mention to you that you need to pay for your board or that your bag will be taken as cargo if over a certain length, then either charge you or fail to take it they are in breach of conditions (assuming it states somewhere that boards etc will be carried free)

Booked via the internet as usual. Nothing obvious on the net that things have changed but they told me it is in the terms. I explained that as I book regulaly I dont read the terms. I explained that if they had put a banner on the web saying "Ski Equipment Important Changes" I would have read it. Thing is I am at fault but how many people will book and not read the small print as BA are well know for taking ski equipment FOC no questions asked.

Without a doubt. It wouldn't be so bad if the length you can carry was reasonable but overall 160cm. My board alone is 158cm. I suppose if I wanted to generate a bit of money I would also set a standard that you can't meet and hide it by saying its new regs for Terminal 5.

That said I will still probably fly with them as the flight times from Heathrow and their service is good. It still leaves a bad taste though. Just be honest and say were putting the prices up.

had a flight with Alitalia on 15th and my ski bag -around 13 kg was free even that the website was saying that i hae to pay 20 euros i had a bootbag as hand luggage and another bag for the haul which was 9 kg. I even ask to pay them but they said i dont have to. They do mess up my ski bag and i land in sofia without it but was delivered next day up to bansko. And i will claim delayed bags thru my insurance coz i rented a pair.

i read on ba site new conditions take effect from nov 2008. I have queried the size issue it says l x w x h should be 158cm (impossible) but it also says all ski bags will be ok, as was pointed out to me over the phone.

re: British Airways Important Info

The question is will they allow board bags. Most of us have big bags. It is a worry and I will be checking next time I go.
