Reading reports on this site i am somewhat suprised by the continual negative points. I know the site is for airing your views, but lets at least make it worthwile and have some back up for whatever negative point is being made (donners you should really look at yourself here). It is, i feel about time that the brits when your on holiday accept that cultures are different abroad and in many cases far superior to the british culture. Across europe the people work to live and not in the case of the uk where it is live to work. This provides a relaxed laid back culture which is great to experience. So my advice would be to go on holiday, make the most of it, enjoy it and embrace the foreign people and the foreign lands and lose the xenophobic idea that all foreigners are gangsters and just want your money. Its also time to stop the whining that seems to go with everyones vacation.

I am a british holiday maker, and i have just got back from Borovets, what a fantastic resort, the people are all so friendly. I did encounter a little trouble on my second night, when I was enjoying a quiet drink in the Rila reception. When a father and son, from the London area were kicking up a fuzz. Screaming at reception, and accusing anyone owho walked past them of hitting them, I believe that brits, when on holiday should go and enjoy themselves and not start fights and complain about the smallest most insignificant things.

If they want to find a "nice english restaurants" go to Bognor

I am in total agreement with you JEZ. I have been dealing with British tourists for several years now and to be honest I am careful not to generalise them if I can help it. However, with a poulation of 60 million, you have your full spectrum from grade A human to absolute low lifes but its only the later who really leave an impression on the locals. For example I was in a hotel reception when two English guests had been given 40 leva back on an money exchange extra (the receptionist made a mistake) The guests were refusing to give it back as they 'were not legally obliged to' The Rep was explaining the mistake had been admitted and the receptionist was close to tears as 40 leva is no small change with Bulgarian wages, yet the guests refused outright. The rep ended up pulling out his own wallet and paying the receptionist with his own money as you could see he was disgusted (he was neither Brit or local). It is these people who are representing Great Britain abroad and who give them a bad name.

Could'nt agree more. I sometimes am ashamed to be british when abroad you only have to look at Greece and see the fun?! Our youngsters have over there. No respect. I was in Turkey last year great people but I was upset at the amount of tacky gift shops geared at english tourists the ones selling english tea. As I said to the unpteenth person who asked me to come and buy english tea "If I had wanted english bloody tea I would have stayed at home!" When on when will we learn that the world does not revolve around our needs?

I dont think we will ever learn thats the problem. We have always lived on an island and it seems that accepting whats out there in the big wide world is too difficult to cope with. Brits are better, cleaner, friendlier, have the right ideals on life, never cause trouble, we live the perfect life. My arse, brits thought the french were dirty as they used bidets, little do they know. The streets are clean in europe because the europeans respect where they live, so they dont throw litter or leave supermarket trolleys in the front garden or even graffiti their street signs.

They also have a big faith and trust in the family they are part of, these families instill the qualities of life and tradition, so it's never forgot.

The big concern is that these places we head to in Europe keep their dignity and dont spoil it to compensate the brits having their sunday dinners and fish and chips so they dont miss home.

I'll get off the soap box now put on my football shirt and head to mcdonalds for some proper food.!!!!

I think one of the points here is that Bulgaria in somes ways is a unique skiing / holiday experience, Which you either love or hate.

The country is poor, the hotels are not always up to standards that some may expect, the ski infrastruture is sometimes a litle basic and disorganized in comparison to other 'wealther' europen resorts.

But, in general the people are friendly, the country and scenary are stunning, the whole thing is soooo cheap, the resorts are not specifcally geared for brits (like much of spain, turkey etc - No "We sell Heinz backed beans" signs everywhere...you know what I mean), and the ski instrutors are great.

I've been to Pamporovo twice (feb 2002 and jan 2004), I've stayed in 2 star hotels (Hotel Rohjen) , populated mainy by bulgarians, with waiters that dont speak english, and some strange dinners, But this is all part of the charm, and why I'm going back next year (hopfully for 2 weeks).

But some of these reasons are also why some wont like it. I loved the hotel Rohjen, (2 star) but Some would hate It. Some would find the basic infrastruture to much to cope with etc etc.

Its a case of each to there own, different people want different things from there holiday. What some as negative points, others see as a positive (like me!)

I paricularly like some of the points raised by Garry.

We always travel with an open mind both abroad and in the Uk. We have been to some real hovels in England and take them for what they are and what we paid for our break away and always have a good holiday - sometimes not wishing to return of course

Bulgaria is somewhere we as a family feel very comfortable with - we are hard working and unpretentious and enjoy being sociable and finding out about the place in which we are staying. I know for a fact there are several friends of mine who would hate it in Borovets and there are others who would love it just like us.

Like all things - suck it and see - and if it's not for you don't go back. If it's good then shout about it from the roof tops!! But not too loudly as soon there won't be room for all of us
