Bulagria - a different perspective

Ok, bit of perspective here. Before i start, this is from someone who was in Boro last year and had a wonderful time. I've skied various other resort around Europe as well, so i can speak about both sides.

The reason that attracts most people to Bulagria initially is the cost - it is alot cheaper than Western Europe (particually France) to ski. As with everything, there are trade-offs for that. The infrastructure is not great, there are not 100's of KM of piste and organisation in general ...

The reason that attracts most people to Bulagria initially is the cost - it is alot cheaper than Western Europe (particually France) to ski. As with everything, there are trade-offs for that. The infrastructure is not great, there are not 100's of KM of piste and organisation in general could be improved. There is also a certain seedyness in the resorts, and this can attract a certain kind of people to them (you may see this as good or bad...). Some facilities are pretty basic too.

On the plus (other than cost), the resorts are very lively and you can have a truly great time there. The people are, in the main, very friendly and the instruction does recieve excellent reviews (i didn't use so can't comment). The accomodation i used (Hotel Edelweiss) was excellent and would not look out of place anywhere.

Overall, if you accept certain drawbacks then it is fine for many skiers, and the majority of people who go there will have a good time, as i did. Me, i won't be going back in the near future because i like more variety of piste to ski. I would recommend it to certain types of people (beginners, single sex groups) but not others (anyone better than intermediate, "older" groups).

P.S. Sorry for the long post!!!!!

re: Bulagria - a different perspective

Id have to agree, ive snowbaorded in lots of europe, and also USA and Canada. I have however only ever skied the one resort in Bulgaria - Bansko. other than the fact there are less KM's of piste, overall Bansko is up there with some of the best - the lifts are only around 4yrs old, and are well maintained. instruction and slope facilities are good. Rental equiptment (although i dont use this) is new each season. There is buliding work around the town but the past 2 yrs ive been this does not ...

Rental equiptment (although i dont use this) is new each season. There is buliding work around the town but the past 2 yrs ive been this does not happen during the winter season so therefore does not affect my stay. the hotels are fantastic - the food is edible, but as they are used to catering for other nationalities its hard to strike a happy medium - but ive never gone hungry. Bars, drinks and food are fantastic and cheap. All in all its a good destination
Having been a sceptic myself before i went, i was happily suprised, and have been back since and am going again on 27th Jan.
One last note is i find each year there are inprovements, the 2nd year i went, the road to Basko had been totally rerouted and renovated and was far better, this year there is a new terminal at Sofia airport.

Col, personally i found the hire kit apalling - bent ski poles, old boots and skis that had last been edged and waxed in 1993, but that was Boro, and it may have been a dodgy hire shop.

I went to Bansko last year for the first time previously been to sauze in Italy (part of the milky way 400kms of piste) found it to be on a par with Italy in a lot of ways eg. equipment , lifts ,hotels, obviously not as extensive as Italy but there is only so far that you can ski in a day and i only covered about 10% of the runs in sauze.I am going back to Bansko in Feb this time for ten days and then next year will probably try somewhere else only ofr a change of scenery ,in the end it is ...

re: Bulagria - a different perspective

The hire gear we got last year in Pamps wasn't great. My poles were bent and the boots were a bit crappy to be honest. In saying that, they were well organised and we didn't have to wait long each morning. They could be a bit more courteous, but it didn't really bother me that much.
