The European Commission has dashed the last hopes of the Bulgarian MPs that they could avoid the closure of domestic duty free businesses.
The Bulgarian parliament has received a letter from Brussels, stating that duty-free shops can operate at exit points on the borders with non-EU members. All other duty-free outlets located on Bulgaria's borders will be considered in breach of EU law and could trigger safeguard measures, said the letter.
Brussels is responding to a query it received from the parliamentary budgetary policy committee which wanted to make sure that the closure of the duty-free shops was indeed entailed by European rules.
According to parliamentary sources, the MPs are working on a secure plan for the owners of duty-free shops on the borders with non-EU members Serbia, Macedonia and Turkey.
The measure will affect 3 filling stations and 6 shops on Bulgaria's border with Turkey, Serbia and Macedonia.
