Bansko municipality major Alexander Kravarov has ordered a halt to construction in the famous mountain resort.
The ban covers 28 areas, including the hotel and the villa zones, investor.bg reported.
Construction will remain on hold until detailed zoning plans and street regulations for the areas are completed.
While the ban is in effect, no permits for construction or change in the purpose of the agriculture land would be issued, investor.bg said.
Kravarov’s order is subject to appeal within 14 days.
Deputy mayor Lazar Zahov said that the ban affected new construction. “We have to be aware where and what can be constructed and it has to be in conformity with the infrastructure in the region,” he said, as quoted by Bulgarian news agency BTA.

"Shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted" & "Killing the Goose that lays the Golden Egg" spring to mind. With land sales fallen through the floor, and apartment sales non existent as investors take their money elsewhere, it would appear the Bansko bubble has well and truly burst. I take it from this announcement that there must be an mayoral election due as I can see no other reason for such a pointless statement. This should have been in place 2 years ago before Bansko was raped and pillaged to the point where it looks like Sunny Beach in the snow. This was uncontrolled mass building that has completely ruined the town. With most investors now dissapointed with their investment, and new ones leaving without buying, someone should actually investigate exactly what has happened in Bansko and who was involved in allowing it to happen.

I agree with Diane. It seems over-development in Bulgaria has begun to regulate itself. Let me be honest, I am an eco-tourist and I will gladly pay a premium NOT to stay in over-developed areas like Sunny Beach and Bansko. The main problem is that this over-development has been based heavily on speculation (money as usual). This has and will cause irreversible damage to BG's environment and a valuable source of income.
Well, that about says it all and sums things up quite nicely about just how bad things are in Bansko. It makes me extremely angry as Bansko use to be such a fantastic little gem of a ski resort that nestled in a beautiful and cultural town. However, the last few years have literally raped and destroyed all of that beauty to the extent that it is no longer enjoyable to ski there for the masses of people trying to cram onto the lift system and pistes.

To say that the town planning, infrastructure and development office and authorities failed would be a gross understatement and I would bet good money that they are regretting it now because, as the above post states, what properties remain in Bansko is not only valueless but has destroyed potential tourism growth considerably!!
I agree with everything said, Bansko is well and truely over-developed, the local mayor who i know personally, stopped the further developments, but a little to late, its a shame cause all the other work he does has gone un-noticed, shame nice bloke, this will be a thorn in his side for years to come, so when all the brits and the russians arrive just stand back and watch it all fall down, their are plans to demolish 2 buildings at the mo, but the surveror has only got round a few so far,so ...

Hey Hornster - I loved what was beautiful Bansko - had been there the past two years and "accepted" the building going on BUT this year I just felt upset by the state of the town - OVERBUILD??? - an understatement!!! It was a bloody mess - GREED has taken over for sure. I still love Bansko and will return this season but if it gets too awful with lift queues and so on, I may re-think in the future!! I hope not as it has a strong place in my heart.
