re: Changing the Subject. Bansko, The Future

When I was in Bansko just before Xmas, had a chance to chat with a Canadian guy who was living in Sofia coaching ice hockey. He told me he had been at a meeting between the IOC and Bulgarian sports officals the previous week. His thoughts were that the Bulgarian presentation was first class and the IOC members appeared to be very impressed. His view was the IOC are taking the bid very seriously.

Personally, I would love to see the Olympics there, but I have serious doubts whether the infastructure would be sufficent to host such an event.

They have yet to stage a World Cup event, let alone the Olympics, and they fall well short of the hotels, media requirements and most of all the runs required to stage this.

No ski jumps, bobsleigh or ludge runs, international standard ice rinks, and not the most favourable snowfall history leaves them well short of what would be required ...

I hope I'm wrong, but a massive investment would be required to bring it anywhere close to the standards required for Olympic competition and the chances of that happening in the foreseeable future is slight.
