re: Confused about runs

Hi Mel,

My reasons for advising instructions are two-fold.

1. And the most important, is that I don't want you to get injured on your first trip to the real slopes. You have shown much concern lately regarding runs, lifts, lessons, maps etc. and all this will put you on edge. An instructor will make you relaxed, only take you on runs that he is confident that you can cope with, and ensure you get the maximum fun from your holiday.

2. The great excitement of a skiing holiday is to improve day-on-day and build your confidence so that you become an accomplished skier by the end of your week. Year after year you will get better and better, but this only comes with practice and by being shown the correct way to do it.

I have no idea why you are against lessons, but it's your decision. All we can do is advise. It's because we care that we spend time giving advice, and most of us (not all) are experienced enough in the sport to offer this advice.

It only takes a second to hit some ice you were not aware of to have an accident, which could well have been prevented if your were under an instructors guidance.

It also sounds to me that you and your husband are at different levels in ability (correct me if I'm wrong) and for 2 people to ski together at different levels will be frustrating for both.

In a group you will all be of a simular standard and you then grow as a group.

I'll say no more, it's your decision, but I firmly believe you are making a big mistakes, and I cannot see the reason behind your decision.

At the moment you can doggy paddle, yet you are taking on an ocean you have never tried. BE CAREFUL!!!!!!!!!!

Oh dear I really wish I hadn¡¦t seeked advice.

I do really appreciate your comments, all of you and I know you will all have opinions which I respect.

To be honest I have shown a lot of concern lately about different things but it is the comments on this site which are putting the fear of god into me.

My husband can ski and he will be my instructor, together with the lessons I have had here on the dry slopes. As wrong guns as said and as I have been told, snow is eaiser than the dry slopes. Two weeks ago I had never been on skis, now I can use lifts, walk up the slopes side ways, snow plough and I¡¦m learning more and more each week.

Don¡¦t get me wrong I do thing lessons over there would be invaluable but to be honest I¡¦m not going to try and take up sking as a regular thing. I¡¦m going as I have never been and my husband is keen to go. I won¡¦t be doing anything too adventurous or to cause danger. As for Ice well I can Ice skate ƒº My balance is great on the skis which is helped by the fact I can Ice Skate.

Anyway again I didn¡¦t want to start a debate on whether I should have lessons that wasn¡¦t the purpose of my post.

Pete ¡V I respect your experience.

Wronguns ¡V you have made me feel much better that its possible to have dry slope lessons and then go to snow without snow lessons.

Tanjette ¡V keep counting those sleeps it will soon be here.

Thanks again everyone

Mel (trying to keep this topic peaceful)

Couple more points. Sorry Sad

Debate is not a bad thing.
I think thats the key, you will have your husband keeping an eye on you and giving you advice albeit not professional instruction. But that is only really important in the early stages in my opinion, unless you want to become a much better skier. When your skiing with your partner, it would not be frustrating because when you go away together you want to be together. I went away earlier this year to bulgaria with a group of friends ...

When your skiing with your partner, it would not be frustrating because when you go away together you want to be together. I went away earlier this year to bulgaria with a group of friends at varying skiing ability, some good, some beginners, but you go away with your friends to spend time together and there are many ways to get down a slope. Easy slopes can still be fun for an advanced skier and i actually enjoy easier slopes more.

re: Confused about runs

THanks wronguns thats my point exactly. The purpose of this trip is to spend time with my lovely husband and not get put apart from him in a ski school.

He may not be as experienced as an instructor but he will be more sensitive to my needs. Its not like Ive never skied before or even been in skis.

If I can't get down I will shuffle on my bum if needs be Very Happy

Thanks sweetie Booze

well, im off to boro on saturday. there are 8 of us (7 guys and a lass) staying at 4* Hotel Royal. DOES ANYONE KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THIS HOTEL? NO-ONE HAS REPLIED TO ANY OF MY POSTS AND IM GETTING CONCERNED THAT IT DOES ACTUALLY EXIST!

Advanced groups often ened up just free-skiing with a bit of advice as you go which can be far more fun than skiing alone.

Afternoons I will prob spend with my mates helping them out, and I am fairly certain I will get as much enjoyment doing that as I will up on top of the mountain

re: Confused about runs

Don't know where your going, but you would not possibly get lost in borovets, unless you went off piste, which i doubt. And slight difference with a 13yr old boy getting lost and 2 fully grown adults!

re: Confused about runs

To be fair i know people who have never skied but are good ice skaters/in-line skaters and have jumped on a pair of skiboards and taken to it like a duck to water. And ice skates are not a metre long. All sports like ice skating, in-line skating have similarities with skiing, which give you an advantage over people who have never done those sports. I actually skied most of the way down Yastrebetz 1 on my ski boots.
