Construction work in Bansko will stop from December 1 2007 and not recommence until April 1 2008, Bansko's mayor Alexander Kravarov announced today - and was quoted by the Dnevnik daily newspaper.
The aim is not to disturb tourists during the holiday season he said. A number of streets in Bansko will be closed to all trucks. Over 30 investors and constructors as well as the police had been informed of the measure, Dnevnik daily reported.
Kravarov said this measure was introduced in Bansko for the 4th consecutive year but this time ambitions were high that it would not be violated. According to Kravarov fines for violators could vary from 1000 to 5000 leva.
Investment interest in Bansko remains high, Kravarov said. For now the municipality has stopped issuing construction permits and now only issues them for sites that submitted their documents and had them approved 2 years ago. The mayor said the issuing of permits would begin again after zoning plans were ready.
Bansko is ready to receive 15 thousand tourists this winter. 10 new hotels and holiday sites will open their doors to tourists for the first time. The launch of the 2007/2008 ski season will be attended by ski legends Janica Kosteliĉ, Kjetil André Aamodt and Marc Girardelli as well as famous mountaineer Reinhold Messner.
Two ski tracks have been renovated for the new season and have been supplied with artificial-snow machines, Dnevnik daily said. A new 4-seat ski lift had been built.
At this moment in time I'm not too sure where this is located. The total length of the ski tracks is now 70 km, 5 km more than the past winter season.
Meanwhile construction works at Pamporovo will also be stopped until April 1 2008.
The same ban on construction was in place last year, but it didn't seem to make much difference, as the well connected 'Mutri' developers continued to build anyway. Still, this ban seems to have come in sooner this year - I wonder if this means the season may open a little earlier?
Season is due to open on 1st Dec. I think it'll be difficult for the mayor to ignore ongoing construction in the centre of the town, but sure some more isolated developments will be able to come to an 'agreement'. Anyway, you can't easily pour concrete in winter temperatures so the worst excesses of rumbling lorries should be avoided. Interior work will continue, so expect to be awoken by the gentle tap of 10,000 hammers.....
thanks for info pp... i think the mayor has banned construction on new lifts ..etc for years now ........ the que s will only be longer at the gondala....development on mountain has not kept pace with hotel development
The Season in Bansko does not offically open until the weekend around the 15th December. So far there has been no talk of them opening earlier this year
