I'm a tad worried about money and credit cards. Do people generally take Leva with them as i had heard that you couldn't get Leva in the UK which i have since discovered that you can. How widely accepted is English Sterling and US Dollars? Is Leva a 100% necessity?
Please help - any money info gratefully accepted! i know ATMs are quite new as i have read some of the threads!

Amy, Sterling is the best to take (clean or new notes best), less if no commission to be paid. Travellers cheques are accepted but you will pay a higher rate of commission.If you are flying to Plovdiv, I don't think (from memory) that there is an exchange booth, but as soon as you get to your hotel, you will be able to change money at the reception.
If you can get about £50-£100 of Levs before you go, then that would be a bonus.

If I remember correctly there is a small exchange kiosk at Plovdiv airport, the rate was not as good as the resort but Ok for the first few pounds change

I've been through Plovdiv twice and I think there is a kiosk there. Until this year, however, I was under the impression that you couldn't buy Levs outside BG, so I have never taken Levs with me. The coach doesn't stop from Plovdiv to Pamps, so you have no oppertunity to use any levs (there's lots of porters looking for a tip at the airport though). Never had a problem waiting till I get to the hotel.READ THE OTHER THREADS ABOUT CASH. There's lots of good advice about "unauthorised" kiosks.

if you fly to Sofia you need no money to change in the UK, because it is only a trip of around 1 to 1,5 hour to Borovez, better to change there with the best rates. You need no money on the journey from the airport because the will not stop for any break on these short distance. Yes you need Levs normally in all restaurants, bars, shops, everywhere. You can change nearby every money in Borovez into lev, equal if dollars, pounds, euro, krones, turkey lire, and any more. Best is ...

The last rate I remember for dollar into lev was 1dollar was 1,64 lev in decembre.

Porters at airport are only too glad to get a £1 cion for thier trouble. Its amazing what they will carry ontheir trolley for this small amount. Otherwise no need to exchange before hotel. In Pamps an exchange is also at the ski depot and used to give quite a good rate.re: Currency!

I was in a group of four that went to borovets last January. Three of us ordered all our bulgarian currency here in the UK early at the only available outlet which was at Thomas Cook. It is possible that the rate we got wasn't quite as go as that in the resort but you wouldn't notice that when you start using. Your money goes a long way in bulgaria. It also gives you peace of mind that you have money available to spend at the start of your holiday and will not have to look and wait ...

We also visited Lunn Poly, Bakers dolphin, American Express, The Post Office, Going Places but these outlets didn't supply bulgarian lev. The fourth member of our group who only booked just over a week before departure couldn't get any currency here. It seemed that Thomas Cook got a supply of the currency which wasn't endless and when the supply was used there was no more. It wasn't then until the second day that we found an exchange booth for him, although we didn't exactly go out of our way to find one in the first evening. We were hungry after a long day !!!!
