Duty Free changes

As an update in the EU the numbre of cigarettes which is allowed to get Free of duty is now only 300 from Bulgaria and some other EU Nation,
In reason of undertaxation of tabac ans tabac products. The is noted at the Airports, there you will find the old signs with the numbre of 800 fags, but this is wrong.

re:Duty Free changes

Sounds about time. The last time I was in Sofia in September a local had at least 6400 cigarettes from duty free shop and kept the rest of us waiting while they were recounted 3 times.

re:Duty Free changes

Have looked on the UK Gov web site and the allowance is still as many as you like to bring back to the UK if they are for personal use or gifts. It does say however you may be questioned if you are bringing back more than 800.

re:Duty Free changes

I think the key words here may be 'duty free'. Technically the duty free lounges in BG should not even sell you the product at duty free rates if you are travelling to another EU country. What you can bring in from another EU country are those that have been purchased were local tax and duty have been paid (eg a local store).....this is when they then apply the 800 self use guideline.....here is the extract from Gov.UK

2. Arrivals from EU countries

You don’t pay duty or tax on goods ...

You don’t pay duty or tax on goods you bring in from the European Union (EU) as long as you:

transport them yourself
will use them yourself or give them away as a gift
have paid duty and tax in the country where you bought them

Customs checks

If a customs officer thinks you may be bringing in goods to sell, they may stop you to make checks and ask:

the type and quantity of goods you’ve bought
why you bought them
how you paid for them
how often you travel
how much you normally smoke or drink

Although there are no limits to the alcohol and tobacco you can bring in from EU countries, you’re more likely to be asked questions if you have more than the amounts below.
Type of goods Amount
Cigarettes 800
Cigars 200
Cigarillos 400
Tobacco 1kg
Beer 110 litres
Wine 90 litres
Spirits 10 litres
Fortified wine (eg sherry, port) 20 litres

re:Duty Free changes

When you buy at Sofia duty free you have to pay the tax paid rate (not the non-EU rate). It is also my understanding that it is the country of sale that is supposed to enforce EU rules and not the airport where you arrive. So who knows.

I do remember in Sofia airport once in summer a couple of years ago and someone having lots of packs in their suitcase which they checked it-but then they were summonsed and they were all confiscated. The person just bought more in the duty free shop.
