E111 Forms - are they needed

Hi,

probably a dumb question here, but is there any need to take an E111 form to Bulgaria?

Sorry if this sounds stupid, but I haven't got one and flight is in 6 hours (woohoo!)

Cheers,

Mike.

As far as I am aware, the E111 only covers EU countries, and Bulgaria is not yet a member of the EU. I had an accident in Pamps and the only thing they were interested in was my insurance.

On 31 December 2005, your E111 will cease to be valid. From 1 January 2006, you will need a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) to receive healthcare that becomes necessary during your visit to an EEA country or Switzerland.

As the previous poster mentioned Bulgaria is not covered by the UK's healthcare agreements with the EEA countries and Switzerland as far as I know.

All the information you require can be found on www.nhs.uk. Just type in E111 or EHIC.

Hope this ...

Yes definitely take your EHIC (replacement for E111). Even though Bulgaria is not a EEC country you may have to stop in one in an emergency.

A friend of mine had a heart attack on a plane on his way to Egypt. They stopped the plane in Germany so that he could get treated, but all his paperwork was in his luggage in the hold which he didn't have with him. He ended up £35000 poorer after having to pay for his treatment himself.

An EHIC card would have saved him this huge bill.

if you get a recipt you can claim it back through your insurance so don,t worry about it.

Good idea about taking the EHIC with you, I was not gonna bother, am now!.

I would also recommend taking a credit card with you, the hospital may charge you before the treatment. you will then have to claim back from your insurance when you get back. Sad

Best policy is to not take un-necessary risks, (i don't mean by not going out and enjoying yourself) , wear correct protective gear and respect others. Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

Done this a couple of times now:

Bulgaria has a recipricol agreement with the uk and so:

Essential documents:
UK passport and NHS medical card.

What’s free:
Medical, dental and hospital treatment.

What you’ll need to pay for:
Medicines supplied by a public pharmacy.

More information:
Recent changes suggest that the state healthcare sector is very limited. Private medical insurance cover is strongly recommended.

All of this is taken from here

re: E111 Forms - are they needed

The E111 is of absolutely no use in Bulgaria. It is as useful as tits on a fish. Just make sure you are well insured
