Family skiing

Looking at going to Bulgaria with a few families in 2010 - France etc is just getting too expensive! Mixture of ski levels and kids approx 5-12 yrs. Any advice on whether I should go to Bansko or Borovets....? Also can anyone recommend a good family place to stay (very close to ski lifts so not alot of walking for kids!). Any ideas would be gratefully received!! Thanks

re: Family skiing

Have only skied in Bulgaria. We all learnt to ski in Boverets and went for three years running, cheap and everything is close to hotels. Stayed in Rila. Last year we went to Bansko the sking was excellent and slopes better than boverets, but no snow in the town and had to get gondala to slopes. Boverets is better for smaller children and Bansko is for the more serious skier. We are going to Boverets on Saturday with out friends who cannot ski, its great to have snow around you all the ...

re: Family skiing

Hi Lucy,
We r going to Borovets on Sat 4 the third time as a family.
I can recommend hotel Ela. Food isn't that good as most hotels. The first time we stayed in the Rila, too busy. Ela has been recently re furbed. We often eat out on a night.
We always book early generally wi Inghams as they offer a very good early bird discount.
Hope this helps.

Pamporovo-for peace of mind.

Howya Lucy,
For a family holiday there's really only one place to go in Bulgaria and thats Pamporovo.
First of all,its only over 2 hours from the airport to the hotels.Ya don't want to be stuck with a 4 or 5 hour bus journey with small kids after spendin 5 hours already stuck on a plane.
Secondly, the green slopes have plenty of cafes/restaurants etc for grub and drinks, so that you can all meet up "up on" the mountain, not just the good skiers. The kids and the beginners will love ...

Finally, I've been to Bansko, Borovets and Pamporovo many many times with family and friends, and they're all terrific in their own way; but for kids in bars/restaurants and their security and safety in general, we've always returned to Pamporovo with our clan!
It's just a peace of mind thing, as I'm sure you're well aware, when kids are involved.
G'luck anyway,
Best wishes, Seanie Og Wink

I have been to all three only Bansko with young children though, It was excellent as there are two areas where to learn and all the kids could make the road home after 3 days learning. That is a long run for them and they were very proud. The children are welcome in the Mehanas, and if you go down to old town, you will get good priced food.

Pamporvo was very friendly, and yes i could see it as a good place for families, it is all hotel life though.

I have read here that Borovets has a village too, but i never found it. To me it is much more of a young persons place, rather than children . Perhaps i went to the wrong places ? I only saw one place to learn though and that was on a different mountain to any real Pistes ? tell me if i am wrong, I was only there for two days.

The only other thing is the posting about Pamporovo being two hours from the airport? that I believe is only if you are flying to Plovdiv. I do not believe many planes are going there this year. It is more like 4 hours from Sofia, borovets maybe 1.5 hours and Bansko 2.5 hours

re: Family skiing

thanks for your message. Sounds great! Any advice on where to stay - we prefer something easy for kids - ie close to slopes/ski school rather than a long walk carrying skiis etc. Thanks,
Lucy

re: Family skiing

we went to Bansko last year, booked to go back again as soon as we got home!! were going again on the 17th jan and staying at the Guinness which is very close to Gondola, and very nice for families. Nice appartments. we have 3 kids 9, 11, 13 they loved it. ski school was excellent and the ski road back to village is great. only thing you need to watch are the roads!! pot holes galore!!
