Feb half term competitions

Hi

I am new here, just found the site as i am looking to book a weeks skiing at Borovets in Feb 15-22nd
I have looked to see what events are on that week and it looks like every day is full of championship events

does this mean that certains runs will be closed and the place will be mega busy with skiiers having to use the other runs that do not form part of the championships ?

your thoughts will be most welcome

thank you
kath

re:Feb half term competitions

You should be fine as far as competitions go. They do not interfere with the skiing that much as you can always get to other parts of the mountain depending on what level of skier you are. Been going to Borovets for many years now and never had a problem. Well not with the competitions only with the crazy people I ski with.

To be fair, they don't like it when you use their slalom poles

Hi emjay,

Not surprising really if a competitor is stopped from qualifying cos a load of wannabies have gouged great grooves in all the lines round the poles. I for one am not taking on the wraith of the Bulgarian army, even if we are the invasion !!
We were there last year and the juniors were competing, only saw the practice runs, the weather closed in and was on the cuss between rain and snow, but those guys were flying past us on Yastrebets, you would hear them coming behind you and ...

( a bit scary)

Booze theres nothing worse than someone 'having a go' when they see a slalomor gs course set up, firstly if its slalom and one of the poles hits you you will know about it!! secondly its dangerous to the trainees on the slope thirdly as said before it f***s up the line. Usually when the comps are on they race on yast 2 or 3 and have the other one to practice on, it doesnt usually impact much and not even for the whole day, when the races are on 3 why not take a break at the Yastrebets Hotel ...

Very Happy

My comment was meant to be taken as tongue in cheek guys, l know there hasn't been much snow yet but lighten up. Maybe I should have employed a :-)

Although on one of your points Fraser about 10 years ago some poles had been left on Marky 1 and I was skiing with some people out of the Samokov hotel. The Instructor (known to you) had suggested 'having a go' at them. Unfortunately the bloke in front of me, Keith I think unfortunately took out two of the poles with his face, one broken nose and some reconstructive surgery on his teeth along with some associated body bruising later he made a full recovery. As it happens, I think that you Fraser was the first on the scene and took the injured man to the little hut that used to be on the corner and got him a coffee, no idea how he managed a coffee. I never did get to give those poles a go.

Hi emjay,

Not meant as a rebuke, I would love to have a go with soft poles, it,s just can see there point of view when trying to practice. We will just have to do what we always do and use the boarders sitting in the middle of the piste as slalom objects Wink

re: Feb half term competitions

Seriously you and Fraser are right. I would never consider trying the poles out when they are actually using them for competition or even practise. The number of times I've seen some incompetent attempt a couple of turns right in front of somebody doing a flying run, it's frightening. That said, if they leave them up after about 3.30pm, are not using them and don't rope them off then they are fair game as I see it.

As for boarders sitting in the middle of a piste, why oh why do they do that

Yes mate if they leave them up after practice, then they are fair game. had lessons in Italy one year and the instructor was a local hero at slalom he had skied for Italy when younger. He ad a word with a team who were practicing and he gave us a lesson after they had done! OMG it,s so hard, we had about 150 meters of close poles and I was knackered after the first run. He was about fifty and still he could ski back up the hill almost as fast as we could go down between the poles.
