We have just arrived home after a week in Borovets.
The weather has, and is, being cruel to Borovets right now. We left this morning and the slopes are getting in a bad way with half term just beginning and high temperatures forecast this week.

A private instructor we were talking to yesterday summed it up well when he said that without snow this week the resort should close. I understand why as bare patches are coming through on the reds down to the Rila and by the afternoons they are dangerous with churned up slush and beginners falling down all around you as they have no other way to get down other than walk. There have been no snow cannons in use for quite a while as it is too warm so there is nothing fresh to cover the icy patches and rocks starting to show,
I cannot blame Borovets for the lack of snow but, as others have mentioned, the constant hassling by touts and multiple strip clubs do little to make you want to come back again unless you are in a stag group, and there were plenty of those waking us up screaming and shouting at 4am.
That's it for me now. We won't be returning as deals are getting so much better in French ski resorts. We have really enjoyed Borovets over the years and we are sad to say goodbye. But instead of investing and cleaning up the resort Borosport just want your cash..... And I'm afraid mine is going elsewhere.
I hope you all enjoy your holiday in Borovets, and may the snow gods work a miracle for you.
Did you see what any of the beginner runs were like? I'm guessing they will also take a hit next week. I have until tomorrow afternoon to decide if I change and go to pamps, going to cost £150 if I do not sure if it is worth sticking it out or not
My wife and stepson but took their first steps on skis last week so yes I saw a fair bit of the beginner slopes.
The only slopes available to beginners are outside the Rila, two very very short green runs with drag lifts. From 9:30am the queues for these lifts are tortuous. There are two blues, one is at the top of the chair lift but be prepared for a very long walk carrying your skis if you can't ski down a red run as there is no alternative. Hi Popmop,
My wife and stepson but took their first steps on skis last week so yes I saw a fair bit of the beginner slopes.
The other blue is a short very packed and narrow slope that, by lunchtime, is a mess and will get much worse in this heat.
So although I don't know Pamps I would say that it is well worth changing if that resort has decent beginner runs open.
Mark said in his first post that an instructor said that without any more snow this week, the resort should close!! There is no snow forecast!
Bloody hell, pay £150 and ski for a week!
Just came back from Borovets last night. I was a beginner skier on my 2nd week skiing. I can say conditions are very bad for those who have progressed from newbie beginner and wish to ski longer greens and blues. I managed to ski from the top of the Rila chair lift down including two of the Rila reds. One of them was a real struggle due to icy conditions and being quite narrow. I also gave Yastrebets3 a go and struggled with the long red section partly due to my level of fitness and ...

I also gave Yastrebets3 a go and struggled with the long red section partly due to my level of fitness and feeling under the weather. The best bits of the Yastrebets3 was the first part and the shorter series of steep parts at the end where you can traverse part of the way down before bombing down the remainder.
The people you meet helped make for a fun holiday and my ski instructor was good. However I've been to Borovets twice now and will give it a miss for a year or two now to try somewhere else possibly like Andorra.
PS - On the way back to the airport at Sofia it was so warm and sunny that it felt comparable to coming back from a holiday in Spain in May or June!
re: Final report from the slopes Borovets 15th Feb
I agree with you there Mark!
We returned on Saturday after spending the week in Borovets, it was our 5th time and although we still love the place its a shame that it just isn't the same anymore.
The lack of snow cannot be helped, and for the 2 beginners in our group it wasn't a problem. But for myself and my husband, we did become a bit bored of the options of areas to ski after a few days. Yastrabets was the best bet for conditions and the bus shuttle service to get there couldn't be ...

There are so many more touts outside the restuarants and some are just plain rude (BJ's escpecially) and the nutter ourside golden chicken! We found ourselves walking round the back of places just to avoid.
Hunters ski school and hire were great as always, as was our apartment in the Flora, and we have our favourite places to eat/drink that were still very good. We made the best of the week and had a great time...but think it will probably have been our last trip to Borovets
