Finland

I was advised to go to Finland for christmas. After doing a bit of research I found the average temp is -11. Has any body experianced this sort of temp while skiing? it sounds a bit to chilly for me. Garunteed snow, but the brass monkeys won't be happy.

re: Finland

I have been skiing in Bansko in temperatures as low as -27'C with the windchill factor. Best to have the right clothing for such temperatures! Wink

re: Finland

-11 is fine, Like Honster i too have experienced colder temps. It's not the weather it is the clothes you wear. Get that right and you will be fine.

re: Finland

I've not been skiing before. I've booked for feb 17th Borovets, don't realy know what to expect regarding temps. I have ridden a bike for years though, I've had my eye lashes freeze and my hands so cold I had to slide them off the bars. I think I've got the right gear, it's certainly cost enough. Hopefully the excitement will keep us warm, if not the hip flask will.

We want to Lapland (Finland) December 2005. It was
-20 degrees, but we skied. Whilst we were there, there was never any wind so it is quite a dry cold, and didn't feel as cold as you would expect. We went to Pamporovo on the 7th Jan this year, and on the last day it was quite cold (about 0 deg). Our children complained continually that day about the temperature, but never did in Finland. It is a fantastic place to go, and I would certainly go back - no comparison at all between ...

re: Finland

Also, dont believe everything you here about the prices. I found Finland not too expensive. The locals are incredibly friendly, and the food was great. The ski-fitting guys are wonderful - proper ski fitting, not like Bulgaria where they just shove a pair of skis in your face, regardless of whether they're the right size or not. In Finland they weigh you (can be embarassing) and the equipment was first class.
Have a wonderful time.

re: Finland

We booked with First Choice as a "Lapland Experience" for 5 days, which did work out quite expensive. We booked our ski hire when we were there because we only skied for one day, and our children had lessons for that day.
However, Inghams certainly go there and I have friends who went with them. It is certainly far cheaper to book as a "ski" holiday than as a "Lapland" holiday, and if I were to go back, which I certainly will, I would book with Inghams as it worked out far cheaper. All ...

All the hotels where we stopped (Levi) were lovely, most have swimming pools etc, and there is a "Spar" supermarket which is cheap, especially for buying sledges etc. There is also a section partitioned off for sledging which did stop accidents of sledgers going into skiers.
