First time to Bulgaria:Whats is like?

Hello,

Guys am wondering if anyone can give me a experienced (prefferably unbiased) view on skiing in Bulgaria, namely Borovets?

My friends and I have a spare week in late Jan and are looking for a cheap holiday, with great skiing. All going have done at least 2 seasons, and have skied france's three valleys, st anton, etc to death, I have BASI 2 instructors, so we are looking at quality reds, blacks, moguls, heli-skiing, off piste, etc!

It looks great, very cheap, with all the facilites you would expect to find.
My questions are: Are is it for experienced skiers, e.g. run steeps, downhill courses, heli skiin, ski parks, etc?
How much are 6 day lift passes?
Are there good restaurants, more importantly good 'Apres ski' bars with beer cheaper than france?
if you can help that would be great.

Hi Jim,

I love Boro and have been 5 times, going back for a 6th in Feb. I love it but you asked for an honest opinion so I'll give it to you.

I'm a skier so don't know much about boarding, however given your experience that you have mentioned and other resorts you have been to, my opinion, (that's MY opinion), is that you may be a bit bored (excuse the pun). I think you will find that there are too few runs and to get anything vaguely extreme you'll be forced to follow the pillons ...

Others may say differently but I would say you would be bored. I go back as its my Bulgarian friends, the apres ski and value for money that is great rather than the quality of skiing.

Hope this helps in some way, drop me a line if you need more.

Greg

re: First time to Bulgaria:Whats is like?

I agree with Greg.
It will be my 3rd year this year, but probably the last.
Lovely place & people, great apres Ski & (very) cheap food & drink, but its not a huge resort & has little extreme skiing or off piste (as far as I know).
I have only skied twice so far (but I learnt real quick) & have skied the complete resort last year.

i have been both to borovets and bansko and i would reccomend bansko as it is more suited to the advanced skier, it is quite likely that you would get bored at borovets. there is alot better quality pistes at bansko as well as alot more off piste, i think heliskiing may be available at bansko but im not sure.

Hi

been to pamporovo and borovets. Nightlife good, but skiing,...Pamporovo is great for beginers and borovets more intermediates.

Bansko is probably more suited to your abilities. Checkout pistemaps etc, see what you think. Apparently has some good untracked off-piste too!

Theres an aticle in "Falline Skiing" magazine" this month on Bansko. This is a mag aimed at the more freeride/backcountry skiier. Read it if you can, it may help.

re: First time to Bulgaria:Whats is like?

Hi Jim,
I have to agree with these guys , you sound like somebody who enjoys some challanging skiing and your not going to get it in Borovets,I like it, it suits me, easy skiing , friendly people, good fun. if your looking for as you put it " good quality reds blacks moguls off piste and heli" then sorry the answer is no Borovets is not for you. However if you want a good holiday at a good price with a great choice of night life with friendly people then you cant go wrong with Borovets ...

lift passes, i think we are paying about £65, for 6 days this year, but you must buy in advance when you book as the price will double if you pay for your pass in the resort.
Ive never skied france but from what ive heard it seems Borovets is a lot cheaper for eating and drinking.
any more feel free to ask ,Kel

re: First time to Bulgaria:Whats is like?

I've just got back from borovets on new years eve.
and i have to say it was amazing.
And really cheat at 3 levs a pint !!

For experienced skiiers however it's not very challenging.
I skiied most of the black runs while there and found little difficulty. After 3 days i got a little bored with skiing available but there were some hilarious accidents involviing a rediculously steep 15minute long button lift ! haha Very Happy

However it's good for beginners and intermediate skiiers looking to improve confidence.

There are loads of bars around the slopes.
and plenty of restuarants. If you do go try the happy duck down to the right of the Samokov hotel or "Pizza" a restuarant opposite the happy duck.

I hope this helps?
