Food - Coeliac Disease

Hi

I'm a coeliac, so I am restricted in what I can eat unless I wanna be sick. Staying in Pamporovo Hotel. Does anyone know if Bulgaria caters well for coeliacs or if there is any awareness of the disease?

Mickie.

Im exceptionally doubtfull that you will find specific foods aimed at you, its been my expearience that i cant through out most of europe never mind the ex eastern block. I may be wrong, and im hoping i am but good luck, anyway. I found that the people i booked my hol with, (lun poly,) were very certain that it wouldnt be a problem, however the actual tour operator specified that they would not guarentee anything, after i had paid of course.

I have had a scout who was gluten intolerant and we managed at camp in a field in the middle of nowhere. I would recommend that you take with some of the special pasta and bread so at least there is a back up if you find yourself hungry.

There's lots of meat, salad and soups, but you may need to ask them not to put croutons in.

I'm a Colitis sufferer, not the same as you granted but I have some empathy. I've also been to Bulgaria 10 times. Not Pamps but Borovets and I would assume that the food is the same. I would think that a lot would depend on your accom in so much as are you b&b, 1/2 board or self catering? They do like their meat in BG in particular Chicken and Pork and the sausage is very different to ours so unlikely to be full of bread. Also when you go to a restaurant you tend not to get your food all on the same plate. In otherwords your pots will come on one dish, your salad (for which they are very fond of) will come on another as will the veg of choice and the meat will be served seperately. Somebody on this forum should be able to suggest a decent restaurant in Pamps where you will be safe. I'd keep away from fried as it could be dusted in flour (even the potatoes) and probably keep away from anything with a thick sauce as this could have been thickened with starch or flour containing gluten so unfortunately the local stew (kavarma) might be out. All the food groups that you can eat are available in BG and you can get them plain so you should be ok.

Can I suggest that you take with you some Bulgarian text which states exactly what you can and what you cannot eat, and why.

My husband is lactose intolerant and we have a paragraph on my smart phone in cyrillic which lists what he can't eat. I always have my phone and just hand it to the waitress when we are ordering. We've never had a problem since.

www.dietarycard.com

A few years ago one of my boys was having some intestinal problems and had to avoid wheat. I ordered a card online (about £5-6) stating this and we showed it in restaurants.
All was fine. We did take some gluten-free pasta and those packaged rolls and some foods he could eat, but we didn't really need them. We found plenty of meat and vegetables, and avoided sauces etc.

With the translation issues and the fact that you will be quite ill should you eat something you shouldnt, then I think the price of the card is a small price to pay for peace of mind.
