Heavy snowfall, which continued for nearly 24 hours, blocked life in almost entire Bulgaria.

The snowfall impeded traffic across the country and resulting a severe traffic jams in several Bulgarian cities.

Capital Sofia was this time relatively well prepared to cope with the heavy snowfall. Sofia mayor General Boyko Borissov personally controlled the work of the concessionaires responsible for the snow cleaning. In his words much has been done over the last night, but there is even more to be done.

Borissov ordered that the stops of the public transport and the underpasses are cleaned. Sofia mayor also asked for additional techniques for salting the north part of the ring road.

A total of 350 cars are involved in the snow cleaning process.

The heavy snowfall closed Sofia airport for hours on Sunday. The airport was reopened at noon. The airports in Black Sea ports Varna, Burgas and Bulgaria's second city Plovdiv have also been closed because of the snowfall.

The snow that fell during the weekend blocked entire Bulgaria. The road situation remains complicated. A total of 271 villages remained without electricity on Sunday because of the snow.

A state of emergency has been declared in the Banite municipality near Smolyan (near pamporovo) after nearly 24 hours of heavy snowfall. The roads in the entire municipality are impassable and the snow cover in nearly one meter deep, Banite mayor Raycho Danailov explained
