Help Required

Going to Sofia for a week in New Year. We intend to do a bit of skiing in the area around Sofia, any suggestions where the best place is? Best place to hire ski's boots etc? How much is lift pass in this area?
Intention is then to go to Bansko for 2 days. Again same info required. My children are 6 & 8 and never skiied before, in fact never even seen snow as we live in SW Ireland. Any advice on ski schools for them would also be appreciated. Many Thanks,
Kieran

re: Help Required

As far as I'm aware there are no slopes around Sofia as it is not up a mountain.

4 hours to Pamporovo and a little less to Borovets.

re: Help Required

Kieran,
Nearest Ski slopes to Sofia are Vitosha mountain, and you can go there by bus, You can hire skis and boots there.... there is a ski school there and you should have no problem in getting started. Borovets is 1 hour away and has all the facilities you might need.

From memory sw Ireland does not have many ski slopes, but has great bars and beautiful scenary, hope you enjoy your stay in Sofia and come back again to have a full weeks skiing

re: Help Required

You can try Vitosha just outside of Sofia. But that is mainly used by locals so dont know much about it. Perhaps just head for Bansko.

re: Help Required

Isn't there a small ski area nearby though??

Sorry don't know the name but believe locals can ski without going to the 3 main resports.

Looking for same info myself, we're going to Basko over new year. I have found this website very useful, there's links on the left for "ski resorts in Bulgaria", it lists one called Vitosha which it says is only 10k from Sofia. Bansko has a ski school called Ulen whch has a junior club, not sure where to hire stuff yet, my cousin has been before and says it is pretty straight forward though. There's a link to prices if you click on Bansko at the top of the page, then on "Ski/Snowboard ...

re: Help Required

I stayed in Sofia last year for a couple of weeks. Mount Vitosha is literally on the outskirts of the city. You get an amazing view of the mountain from the main shopping street named Vitosha boulevard. You can get a bus from Sofia to the slopes or alternatively a taxi. Alternatively, like others have said, you could go to Borovets or bansko.

Have fun
