Historical times when Bulgaria get snow

Having been interested in Bulgaria and Bansko for the last 8+ years I've seen very clearly that on average the ski season is always later in the season ie feb and onwards where as Dec is very risky and Jan pot luck.

You can never tell Gareth, last year was not too bad early on in the season, the season before, 2011/2012, was the best ever season ,this year we have had a really poor start. But your observations are correct and we do tend to get better snow later in the season with the end of February and into early March being more reliable. Let's hope we that this is true for this season and we get a big dump of snow soon.

re: Historical times when Bulgaria get snow

I've been Bulgaria 3 times now, and this Saturday being my 4th... have always gone end of January to (usually) give enough time for decent snow, while the temperatures are (usually) at their coldest to possibly help with snow or at least snow cannons. Borovets back in 2010 had pretty bad snow conditions (no way near as bad as this year now), but was cold enough for snow cannons, and with a nice dump of snow half way through really helped. Borovets back in 2010 had pretty bad snow conditions (no way near as bad as this year now), but was cold enough for snow cannons, and with a nice dump of snow half way through really helped. Bansko the last two years, 2012 was absolutely amazing conditions, freezing cold, and tonnes of snow (even in the village!), and last year was looking worrying, but things really picked up just before we went, and had every run open with plenty of snow, and still cold enough. And going in less than a week, with weather looking to cool down with a bit of snow after an abnormally warm and dry lengthy period.

So to be perfectly honest, Bulgaria in general seems to be a bit hit and miss, although would definitely avoid December and beginning of January time as the snow seems to fall a bit later - but temperature wise, i think we hit it right every year with end of January, beginning of February! Smile
