Just got back from the Lion and dissapointed to say the least. Stayed at the Perun last year and the Lion is not a patch on it. The restaurant run out of food all the time if you got there after 7pm and ended up waiting 10-15 mins b4 they brought out any more slops. The staff on reception were very rude and not helpful at all. I phoned and asked for a towel at one point and was told to come and get it myself. No Kettle in rooms, no bath robes, no slippers. Also the Spa facilities are much better at the Perun. The pool is very small in the Lion. I had a massage in both and it was much better in the Perun.
The skiing was great though. Prices have gone up a lot since last year. Lunch on the mountain was 22 Leva that was for a pork dish with chips and 1 beer. The Mehanas in town were quite reasonable tho about 50 Leva per couple 2 courses plus drinks. The Pizza man outside the friendly bar was great, huge slice for 2lev and pancake for 3 leva.We did eat in the Lion pub which was quite nice but my husband found a caterpillar crawling across his fajita. Put him off a bit.
Sorry to hear that your stay at the Lion was dissappointing. I was there in September, the food was good and plenty of it and the staff were all very nice. Saying that the hotel was very quite at that time of year and maybe the staff were all bored and were only too willing to help out and be nice
You could be right. In the restaurant they charged us 6 leva for a bottle of water which was obviously straight out the tap coz the seal was broken every time.
We will not be returning again. Last year we were so impressed with the Perun, so it was such a dissapointment. I will be writing to airtours in the next couple of days. We did write an essay on out comments form but they probably chuck them away. Cant beleive what they said to you it is awful.
you can drink the water from the taps in bansko, it comes from the springs around there, so is the same as bottled, although being 6 lev for water does sound step.
Bob/Mel - I spoke at length with the First Choice rep and she seemed to accept what we were saying and indeed agree that the hotel lacked customer service skills and indeed the restaurant was inadequate for the size of the hotel.
Infact the hotel reception was so bad, that new guests from Israel were given a keycard programmed with our room number, which they entered at 3am on the Thursday morning.
Far from impressed. Again the staff at the hotel seemed clueless to deal with it and ...

Far from impressed. Again the staff at the hotel seemed clueless to deal with it and simply laughed. They blamed a software error, and in respect of this gave us late check out (60 leva).
Disappointed with Bansko - for us it was not what it was 4 years ago. Staff on the slopes were rude and at times bad mannered to the n'th degree.
The skiing was good and our instructor was great (Yasin). Our transfer was also good with just 4 of us in the transfer bus. Indeed on the way home our 'guide' from Bansko (born and bred) simply hated what was happening to her village and hoped in 10 years time the new apartment blocks would be pulled down.
I know many people like Bansko - we did 4 years ago and would have highly recommended it, but now (and I cannot believe I am typing it) I woudl recommend against not going there.
It is now over hyped, over booked, too many beds, more hotels and apartments been built, and staff on the slopes really very bad mannered.
As for the old town that was the only saving grace - trememdous warm hearted people, once again very cheap and great food.
The Mehana downstairs in the Loion served great food at an additional charge - and they all had polite manners.
If Bansko continues to develop in the nature we found last week, I fear it will become a great big white elephant.
