Got back last night from Borovets. An enjoyable week overall. I stayed at the Iglika and to my suprise the food was really great, try the lovely hot chocolate. I spoke to a few people that stayed at the 2 big hotels who described their food as average to poor. Found the Joy snack bar near the bottom gondola station. Snacks they are not, tastey big portions, lovely soup. Went with Inghams, never saw the rep. Equipment though was good quality and new this season. Sunday was chaos, managed to get 2 runs on the 4 chair before a major power cut. A tree fell on to the main power line feeding the resort and wasn't restored till 3.45pm.The gondola only ran to the mid-station for the first five days. Managed to get to the top on the last day (very cold -25 with a high wind chill factor to add on), should have taken a face mask. The lift operators have not been paid for a month and will close the top half of the gondola if there is any slight gust of wind. My advice is to get to the mid-station, from there you can ski down the main red, on the second flattish section there is a cut through on the left through the trees. You then come onto a road, ski down (watch out for the odd car) for 50 meters and the T bar drag lift is on your left (generally empty in the afternoon). A 10 minute drag (in 2 sections) will take you to a choice of 3 normally empty good reds. It snowed a bit during the week so there was fresh undisturbed powder on these runs. If you stick to the 4 chair the queues can really build up (10:30 am to 1pm) if the gondola is closed, no queuing at all if open. Not the best resort for beginners as there are to few blues. Good for intermidiates though. Single chair closed this season, a new 4 chair is planned for next but I witnessed no construction in progress. It's my guess the timescale is over optimistic. The piste maps show in a slightly different colour 5 or 6 new lifts planned for the next 3 years, it was confusing trying to decipher the real lifts from the imaginary ones. Did not try night skiing (too cold), had more then enough good skiing during the day. In the evening the local draught beer is good and cheap 2 to 3 Levs. The Buzz bar is the liveliest night spot. Happy hour ( buy one get one free, so only ask for one drink if you require two) 10 till 12pm except Wednesday when they also charge 6 Levs admission (normally free). Borovets has the potential to be a much better resort if they can just get some more organisation. Better signs and announcements on a PA would help. I might go back in 3 years if and when the improvements are made and the ski area doubles in size.
