Hi Katherine,
Just a quick note to say that I've left some art materials and clothes at Hotel Pamporovo and hope you can take it to the orphanage on my behalf. Many thanks, Anne.
orphanages in England?
In Bulgaria 99.9% of the children there are Gypsy. It's ironic that they find better conditions there, than if they were raised by their irrespinsible(often criminal) parents. In the last 6 months alone over 20 Gypsy kids under age 8 died from infections due to poor hygiene or fire(they were locked home alone, while their parents were playing in a casino!).
I admire people like you helping the poor Gypsy kids in the orphanages.
I don't know that we do have 'orphanages' here. The social service system tries to locate children in state care with families as foster carers/parents. Or they live in children's homes with carers in an attempt to maintain some sort of 'family life'. These are often unstable but if children need permanent care the emphasis is on trying to have them fostered or adopted into the community rather than the institutionalised orphanage type of provision. It's not a perfect system by any means. ...

Thank you for your answer, Kitty.

The problem in BG is that a lot of people(mainly Gypsies) have babies instead of just using contraceptives. There are many mothers who already have 5-6 kids and just give away the next ones. That's due to specific cultural differences. Gypsies are very hard to integrate:they prefer to live the way they're lived for the last 1000 years, shunning education and sending their kids to beg and prostitute instead of school. Recently the ministry of social affairs decided to stop welfare for parents whose kids don't go to school and it's slowly giving results. There need to be strict measures imposed, because these people do not want to be a part of society. In fact most Gypsy girls, raised by their parents are sold at age 12 to be married. They make about 5-10 kids in thir lifetime; Bulgarians-1. It has already become a matter of national security.
