Lift passes - buy in UK or in Boro?

Does anyone have any experience of buying lift passes and hiring boots/ skis in resort instead of through tour operators? I'm thinking that if there's not going to be any snow don't want to have wasted money!!

Get them before you go through your operator. Much cheaper that way.
