There is an MTEL (bg mobile operator) office in the hotel samokov. You can buy a SIM there for about 20lv.

The card in in English ok, but your phone will need to accept it. If your phone is linked to some other system, it will not, just like you cannot put a pay-as-you-go card in your phone from another mobile operator. Phones can be decoded, but this is complicated. You might have to buy a second-hand local phone, or rent one. I had my old Orange phone decoded (or uncoded) in a local shop and use it in Bulgaria.

All my family PAYG phones have been unocked to accecpt any SIM card in the UK so hopefully they will be ok in Boro,

I just hate the thought of having to pay money to receive texts etc.

Bansko George,

all the phones here in Belgium are not with a 'active' code, only the simcard is..so I can put my mothers card in with a different mobile operator (Mobistar, just need her cardcodenr.) and then back to mine (Proximus).
I started with a 'pay& go' from proximus years ago.
Mobiles (GSM) are not 'linked' with a company here and you pay more for the GSM then for the card!
(I saw in germany that you can get a GSM for only 1 euro!! so that are the thing you talk about, I guess ...

When I lost my previous GSM on the slopes in Borovets, I had to make a call to cardstop and then ask for blocking my GSM..
I still have the same nr. but was lost everything! Felt so lost ;

re: Local Sim Cards

Had no problems with my mobile last two weeks, normally these phone is locked, but try out a card in Bg and had no probs, better to buy globul, the price for both bg operators and normal phones is the same. And the messages are for 18 stotinki in bg and 21,5 stotinki to germany. The card with number is 20 lev with some gimick and you can load it with 5 to 40 lev cards.
