Terry, dont expect to see it mate, its not in your face so to speak. Its there obviously, but very discreat. If your not looking for it you wont see it. Borovets is a charming place that is cheap thats why we go, oh and the skiings not bad!enjoy

But they do exist. All of you who are looking forward to sampling the culture and seeing real gansters should not be disappointed. They are big blokes who drive in Mercedes and BMWs, always black colour, possibly some 4-wheel drives up in the resorts. But unless you pick up a fight with them, you should be fine, as mentioned so many times already. They don't touch tourists, I actually think they scare the petty thieves away.

Yep they do George, you know when to mess about, and when to leave it to the "big guys". I for one wouldnt mess about with them, but they were ok with me, as i was with them. We have to remember its their country, their town and their way of life, we are there for the skiing, the party or whetever, just enjoy!re: Mafia...
Have been away for a coupe of days and this topic keeps coming back. I have been to Borovets for two years in a row with wife and small kids and had an excellent time, no trouble whatsoever. Kids exposed to less foul language than if we had gone to our local McDonald's. I appreciate peoples concerns and don't want to sound condescending - BUT THERE IS NO PROBLEM.
Did you know that all the Policemen in Switzerland, France, Germany, USA, Canada all carry guns - but you don't get gunfights ...

I (don't) remember getting a late night pass in Borovets last year, I could barely get home, I certainly could not get in the Hotel room. The point is if I had been in that state in UK I would probably have been robbed, in Borovets I just couldn't find my room

Ian-i agree with u all " mafia" are good guys at heart-they are business men at heart anyhowre: Mafia...
Bill (and George!)Your right there is no problem, its all hype! No none need be afraid in the slightest about Mafia, if anything your safer because of their "supposed" precence. (ie petty criminals staying away)
