Malev gone bust

Not sure if anyone else is as unfortunate as me and was flying out next week on Malev but if they are then you need to have a rethink as they've gone bust Sad I can see this being very expensive......

I am due to fly out with Malev March 3rd.
If you booked online with a credit card you should be covered by your credit card company. I was speaking to mine this morning and they said if I can can get details from Malevs website detailing how the liquidation is going to be handled ie if they are going to refund fares. If they are not going to do this then you can contact your credit card company for a refund. Is it official that they have gone into liquidation. Websites say that a number of days ago that they were trying to stave off liquidation at that stage and today they have grounded all flights as they have run out of money. I do think they are gone unfortunately as I have always had good experiences with the company but is liquidation official.

OFFICIAL STATEMENT

BUDAPEST, Hungary — Hungary’s national carrier ceased operations, grounded all its flights and stranded more than 7,000 passengers Friday, blaming what it called an “unsustainable” financial situation.

Malev has debts of around 60 billion forints ($270 million) and has been unable to find new investers.

Researchers Brent D. Bowen of Purdue University and Dean E. Headley of Wichita State University compile an annual list of airline quality ratings based on measures such as on-time arrivals, mishandled baggage, oversales and customer service. Here are their findings for 2011, based on data from 2010.
.The state-owned airline, which was established the year after the end of World War II, stopped all its flights at 6 a.m. on Friday (0500 GMT, midnight Thursday EST). Malev is a member of the Oneworld airline alliance that also includes American Airlines and British Airways.

Managing Director Lorant Limburger said that in the past few days its partners suddenly lost trust in Malev and began demanding advance payments for their services.

“This accelerated the cash outflow to such an extent that by today the airline’s situation has become unsustainable,” Limburger said in a statement announcing the shutdown. “We apologize to all our passengers.”

Earlier this week, Malev began operating under what amounted to bankruptcy protection, and a receiver was appointed by the government to oversee the airline.

Company officials said the stoppage immediately affected some 7,200 passengers — 3,500 in Hungary and over 3,700 abroad — who had been expecting to board Malev flights on Friday. Malev said it has contacted other airlines in search of help for the stranded travelers.

Malev had been selling tickets as late as Thursday.

re: Malev gone bust

It is been in the air for sometime.sorry but there are plenty of options to book direct with direct flight still at reasonable prices (appart of Half term Feb) because of the snow conditions being GREAT everywhere in Europe at the moment so people won't book to one destination with the best snow.
Easyjet planes to Sofia this week for example running at 60-70percent capacity on average.
