News interactive is experimenting with putting ‘long form’ programmes on the web to gauge interest among broadband users.

Speaking at yesterday's Inside Track, Paul Clabburn, editor interactive tv and broadband, said it had not been decided if the news player will continue to stream whole programmes once the BBC’s interactive media player (iMP) launches.

He described the BBC's video-on-demand as an arm of news which offered people a mixture of uncut, packaged and live footage.

The index of video clips available on the news player currently includes health, science and technology, business and entertainment.

Launched in October 2004, it currently attracts an average of 100,000 unique users a day. On the day of the London bombings 8.4m requests for video were made, 4.1m of which were successfully served, with the number of people streaming live footage at the same time peaking at 129,000.

Referring to the high numbers of people requesting video that day, he said: ‘In a grim way, we’ve been at the foothills. That was the first time we reached the top and had a clear view of the numbers of requests we could be getting in the future.'

So Mr Potter, you and Captain Spongey won't now have to stay up late to watch Question Time - you'll be able to watch it on the internet.
