Miserable Bulgaria

Consider This...........

You have lived in your home country all your life, most of it spent under Communist Rule where your thoughts and dreams have been surpressed all your life, and any thoughts of making more of your life were nothing more than fantasy.

Then, tourists start to decend on your land from all over the World, with wealth and money like you have never seen before. They want to change everything - the way you talk, the food you eat, the surroundings in where you were ...

They want to change everything - the way you talk, the food you eat, the surroundings in where you were brought up as a child..... EVERYTHING.

They criticize the way you look, the customs that you have cherished all your life, they want to build houses and holiday appartments all over the land and fields you walk in as a child.

Many look down on you and call you miserable even though you work 10 times as hard as they ever have yet still you are poor.

You struggle to keep pace with all the changes in your life that are happening all around you every day, and although the young say this is the free New World - you struggle to come to terms with it all.

Welcome to Bulgaria.

Not miserable one little bit - but maybe a little confused by it all! Understandably!

Bulgaria is changing so very fast - so give them time to adapt. The changes will untimately make their lives and futures much brighter, but for those who are no longer young, it must seem very difficult to come to terms with.

Well done Pete

There needs to be some perspective when people nag about things ..... and also when in Rome etc etc or in Pamps in this case

Hi Pete,
Can agree with you about the communism thing, but really dissagree about working 10 times as hard. I have been to Pamps 3 times now and have yet to see a Bulgarian worker moving any faster than a snail. They could not possibly move any slower or they would be standing still..
Sorry!!!! My view

re: Miserable Bulgaria

Sweetie you have been to Pamporovo - bit like saying you've been to Blackpool and think you've seen the real England.

Spend some time in the villages then you may get some perspective on how hard they really do work.

re: Miserable Bulgaria

Well said indeed. I lived and worked in the Balkans for a year and learned about the things they appreciate and which I think we forget all too easily.
Family, friendship, respect for others.
How many Bulgarians live in old peoples homes?
How many Bulgarians living and working in the UK send back 80% of their wages to their families?

Of course there are rude and unfriendly Bulgarians.
There are also a huge number struggling to make a living to whom we westerners must seem arrogant, ...

There are also a huge number struggling to make a living to whom we westerners must seem arrogant, ill mannered and and ignorant in the extreme.
In Pamporovo recently I saw a skier stop at a restaurant and produce a packed lunch rather than pay a couple of pounds to support the business whose table he was using.
It behoves all of us when we go out there to smile more, shake more hands and act a little less like we own the place.
Oh, and dig your hand in your pocket and give a tip now and again.
Forgive the rant. Webcam showing feet of powder on top of ice and slush I skied on three weeks ago partly to blame.
