Mobile phone usage in Pamps

A very nice man posted this last year. Thought some of you might find it useful....... DW.....

Glo-bul Coverage is pretty good in all the resorts, if you take your mobile you should be able to use it in Bansko, Pamps or Borovets.

Glo-bul Coverage is pretty good in all the resorts, if you take your mobile you should be able to use it in Bansko, Pamps or Borovets.

HOWEVER, if you use your phone a lot (more than half a dozen texts or 5 minutes calls in the week) you should

a) get your phone "unlocked" before you go - probably cost a tenner at most in your local independent phone store, or you might be lucky and find that it's already unlocked then

b) buy a BG SIM card. One of the best deals is the Glo-bul "Connect" pack, which contains two SIMs, one for you and one for your mate. They should cost 20 Lev or less for the pair (I bought mine for this in the Alaska Supermarket in Pamps), and come with credit of 5 Lev each already. So seven quid for the pair, including nearly four quid credit. Texts to the UK cost 18 stotinki (about 7p), and local calls are chicken feed, so do the maths!

It's a bit intimidating at first as all the documentation stuff is in Bulgarian, but once you've put the SIM in, turn the phone on and dial 123. Listen to the nice BG lady speaking BG, pay attention and she'll start speaking English after about 30 seconds or so, and tell you how to switch the language to English - press the appropriate key that she mentions. You only need to do this once, it's remembered at Head Office. Then you can use the phone to call or text locally or to the UK, or indeed anywhere else in the world. It's a LOT cheaper than using your UK SIM.

To top up your phone, you can buy Vouchers in many local stores, for various amounts, 10 or 20 Lev etc. Scratch the silver off the voucher, call 123 (Service Centre) and follow the voice prompts. It's dead easy.

And when you leave, you can give the SIM to a local (my instructor appreciated them as a little extra), bring them back to the UK and try to peddle them here or ron eBay, or even keep them until next year. The credit lasts for a year if you don't use it, so just pop another 10 lev on when you go next winter, and away you go.

Sorry this is a long post, but I thought it might be useful info for you to tuck away.

re: Mobile phone usage in Pamps

Thanks for that Davonne, I am going to be using my mobile a lot when in Pamps to keep in touch with my son who will be boarding, he,s recently been diagnosed with diabetes and I am hoping to spend most of my time at the orphanage so its good to know I can contact him without it costing the earth.

Cheers

re: Mobile phone usage in Pamps

We did this last year - and it was really good. And invaluable for keeping in touch with my snowboarding sons.

We're off again next week and have the old sim cards at the ready!

Has anyone tried to unlock their phone using one of the online companies? Bit wary of trying them
