I'm off to Borovets on saturday and was wondering which currencey people would recomend, and what their experience of currencey money is in Borovets....
the currency is the lev...you needs to preorder it from you travel agents as they dont keep it in stock. it generally very cheap in borovets...best to get money before you go as the exchange bureaus out there can scam you out of moeny with a really poor exchange rate.
we have just come back from borovets . we took cash and found the best exchange rate was in the gondola station. the rila hotel exchange was a poor rate. watch out also fo higher exchange rates ask what their commission charge is the high rate of exchange can be a con .
See my report a few days ago about our holiday at the Samokov last week for some info about exchange rates etc.
We found the best rates at the two TeleBanks on the main road @ 2.82. The small exchange booths seem to operate a scam and only gave us 2.29 despite advertising 2.84 and verbally agreeing same beforehand. Our Hotel gave only 2.62 and the little bank at the Gondola 2.7

best rates in Borovets are at the bank at the bottom of the Gondola station. If you run short, a lot of the bars (e.g. Joy bar) let you pay in sterling/euros and also give you a fair exchange rate.
The best rate available is if you go into Samokov (but it is not worthwhile making a special trip). The bank there was offering 2.8lev compared to 2.7lev in Borovets.
we have just returned from Boro, we took a small amount of Lev and the rest in sterling, all the shops took sterling, we made sure that the notes were clean and unmarked. All the bars and restaurants took lev, it was easy to exchange money and also to get money out the the bank near the gondola, all in all not a problem!
have a brill time.
