This one comes up daily whoever told you to take dollars is a complete and utter idiot and is refering to many years ago travelling to non tourist destinations. You can take levs into the country M&S online are doing a good rate of about 2.7 to the £ not much different than in resort. Dont bother with travellers cheques if you want to take sterling that is fine but make sure you take on english notes and they should be "clean" no rips or marks on them. Take it from me.... I've just got back and found out that it's best to take sterling and change the lot over there.....
There are a couple of commission free booths up the main street that will give you a good rate.
If you can grab a few levs before you leave (I got £20's worth from Thomas Cook or even at the airport).....this will tide you over till you get more changed out there.
Why not just take a cash card? You get a very good rate, 2.7+ , £1.50 commission and free on some cards. Treat it exactly as if you were going to the Eurozone.
