My Bulgaria review

I’m 21 so this review is based on what I’d say a younger person’s perspective. I thought I would write this review for people who have not yet been to Bulgaria and want to hear someone’s honest feelings of the Pros and Cons of the place.

I have been to Bulgaria several times since the age of 16, last year I had a gap year from university and I went snowboarding to New Zealand to Canada back to Europe where I ventured France, Italy and finished in Bulgaria.

Why do I go back to Bulgaria?

The people – In all my life I can sincerely say I have never met a society as friendly and as welcoming as the people of Bulgaria. Bulgarians seem to be happy that you have chosen their country for a holiday unlike some countries where you feel like you are invading or something. Also the locals understand what a queue is (unlike some of the French)

The food – Bulgarian food IS! different, if you are like myself and enjoy trying new things, different taste etc then you will love it. There is a great range so something for everyone, if you don’t like something don’t complain…try something else! Bulgarians use lots of organic ingredients so its very very healthy and has that homemade quality. I have heard that in some of the hotels the food is often a bit cold, but I have never come across this.

The Nightlife – Ok so Bulgaria doesn’t have a thousand raving clubs, but what it does have is a family welcoming, fun, relaxing atmosphere. There are a small number of clubs so dancing to early hours of the morning is available but myself when I’ve been on the slopes all day I’m nakerd and just want to relax.

Accommodation – Accommodation isn’t something that’s very important to me as all I really use it for is sleeping. If it’s important to you then I can assure that the standards are as high as any other country in Europe if not higher. Majority of the accommodation is nice and new, very clean, very modern.

Ski resorts – The ski resorts are really second to none, if you’re a family, on you own or with a few friends and you are a beginner to intermediate level then the resorts are absolutely perfect for you. I consider myself to be a quite advanced snowboarder, my favourite resort is Bansko as it is slightly more advanced and has a few more runs. I like to get away for at least a few weeks snowboarding as season is just too short! So this is one of the cons, Bulgaria’s resorts are quite a bit smaller than some of the resorts around Europe. If you are an advanced skier and going for more than a week then Bulgaria can be a bit limited and a bit repetitive. I think this will all change with Bansko’s plans to team up to make a super resort with the other local resorts.

Value for money – The Value for money is top notch; you can get a 3 course meal with drinks for under £10. I usually allow for £200 spending money which I have never exceeded and always come home with change.

Overall Bulgaria is a perfect holiday for a family of beginners to a group of more experienced skiers, if you looking for great nightlife... go to Ibiza, If your looking for English food… go to the Plough in Nottingham they do a great Sunday roast.

I know this was a bit lengthy… I do have a life honest :p but if you’re reading this I guess you haven’t fallen asleep so thanks for reading and I hope this helps.

Congrats Nathan on a great report.
I to am young at 19 and I have to concour with everything you have said. I too, have ski all over europe and spent this summer in New Zealand, skiing ( obviously), I'm an instructor and could have gone on to work pretty much anywhere in the world, but no, I now live in Bansko for the same very reason nathan has pointed out. Bansko can compeate with the best of them. Again Well done and Bansko Rules!

The bulgarians do in their hat know what a queue is. I have been to Bulgaria on many occasions to the Ski resorts seaside resorts and most of the major cities and I can tell you now that the one thing most bulgarians dont know about is queuing. I have had the misfortune one year of getting knocked over and twisting my knee in Bansko queuing for a lift as people tried to barge past me. I love Bulgaria and go there about 3 times a year, but you generaly have to work at it. Bulgarian people will be extremely helpful and friendly but often you have to invest and build the relationship. You will have a great time if you put in a bit of effort to relate to people but if you dont many Bulgarians will appear to be very stand offish and sometimes rude. I am not writing this note to belittle bulgarians but to encourage people to put in the effort and ensure that they have a great time
