A word of caution if you are travelling by Neilsons and are hiring skis with them. The ski rental place (outside the rila, depot 1) is absolutely rubbish. They will try and palm you off with crap boots and skis if you're not careful. 
There are good skis and boots there, you just have to make sure you are persistent. Most of the staff just give you anything. Make sure you check that you get carvers (especially if you are an intermediate/good skiier) and check the bottom of the skis for ...

I had to buy a block of wax to make sure the snow didn't stick to the skis.
There is also very little space to try skis on. Get there V. Early to aviod the complete crush and better skis.
Good luck! Other than that, the skiing is fabulous great snow at top of mountain. Best skiing I've had in ages!
