I'm having my first few lessons in Boro next wkend.
I'm going to buy myself a board and have heard that a shorter board would be better to learn on. What length of board could I get away with. Like minimum length? Would chest height be a good bet or a bit longer?
if you are looking for a new board try out this guy called Phil at http://e-depot.co.uk/ , they are the cheapest everthing i have found so far, i got a:
Salomon AMP 159 £150 new
Salomon Synapse Boots£95 new
Salomon SPX pro Bindings £95 new
have a look on the snow and rock site for board guide, they are really good, or just email phil he'll recommend a suitable board for your hight and weight.
apologies for the endorsement but they are the cheapes i've ever seen!
Its chin height but there are lots of alternatives. Longer is more stable, and i think faster but it also depends on the quality of the materials, how much flex, how much the ends bend up and other variations.
I bought burton boots, burton bindings (both with lifetime warranties and a cheap board for £260 from Pamporovo last year on my 3rd day.
Id strongly recommend you to do some lessons on the hire boards to check you like it and to see how you fair. Then speak to a friendly person ...

length is not everything your stance is just as important your weight and feet size will determin the right board for you as well.
check out the site below.
you'll never know til you try one on. if you want your board just for going on holidays, then you can get away with something longer. however, if you think you'll be spending a lot of time on dry or indoor slopes, you may want a shorter board. your weight also comes into it (i'm quite heavy for my height so i have a longer board so i don't feel too shakey on it) if you can, try and get to one of the indoor slopes (milton keynes, castleford or (and i'm gonna be sick here...) tamworth. you can ...
