Newbie

Hi,
Just got back from my first ever skiing/Bulgaria experience and have to say I am now a born again skiier! The holiday was booked on my behalf and I was not looking forward to it...sports do not come naturally to me... however after my induction into ski school (after a painful first day falling over) I had an excellent week! If I can ski, anyone can and I'm already looking to come back next year, hopefully we'll actually see some fresh snow then. Thanks to Alpena and especially Nicky my ...
Hi,
Just got back from my first ever skiing/Bulgaria experience and have to say I am now a born again skiier! Thanks to Alpena and especially Nicky my ski instructor for his Bulgarian jokes, recipes and sarcasm.....

HI Claire
I'm also a first timer to the slopes and Bulgaria, going in 11 days time to Bansko. Glad to hear you had a fab time, as i'm also exciting but apprehensive at the same time. Where abouts did you go? And how long did it take you to get the hang of the skiing?

We went to Borovets and I was very apprehensive! I went out with family on my first day and spent the entire 30 minutes (the time it took for me to give up) on my arse. Lots of nice people helping me up all the time....

The second day I grudgingly went to ski school - I had to do it on my own (well with 4 strangers) because everyone else I was with knew how to ski. By the end of the first day of ski school(Monday) I'd learnt the basics, putting the equipment on properly, how to carry it, how to fall *properly* (believe me, you need to know!) and how to stop/snow plough. That was between 9.30 and 3pm with a leisurely lunch in the middle. Same Tuesday, but this time we are up the mountain, doing some gentle slopes. Wednesday, day off (my ski school classmates were having a day trip) Thursday, back up the mountain learning turns and parrallel skiing and stops. Friday, same amount of time but different runs, more advanced (more falling, but I covered that on day 1!). I left on Saturday and was almost in tears because of how much I'd loved it! And believe me, that was not something I'd have said on day 1. By the end of the week I was skiing, not as fast as some, but I felt I'd really achieved something. Bulgarians seem to have a very dry sense of humour and my instructor was exactly what I needed - a good mix of kindness, sarcasm and knew when to push each member of the group. Just go for it - their seems to be a real sense of cameraderie and everyone is kind when you fall over. Hope this essay (!) helps you, I've only really been back a day and if someone gave me plane tickets I'd go back tomorrow. And carry on skiing! Good luck, let us know how you get on!

re: Newbie

Thanks Clair,
Sounds like you had a blast. there are 11 of us and only 1 (15yr old) can ski. So it should be a good laugh if nothing else watching us other 10 struggle. Like yourself we were apprehensive about the both skiing and Bulgaria, but its sounds great. Was it cheap for food and drink we're actually in Bansko but i'm hoping the prices in the different resorts are pretty much the same.

I'll let you know how we get on, we have jokingly said if were no good on the piste we'll just ...

re: Newbie

Yes, everything is very reasonable - although this time I travelled with my 3 year old daughter and 4 year old niece and 8 week old nephew so not as much drinking as I'd like...... Next year will be a different story! Try rum and hot chocolate for lunch, makes everything more fun. Enjoy, and don't forget sunscreen as I did. I now have 'goggle face'. :-( it's warm out there..... And incredibly beautiful.
