As promised, here is my report on last weeks fun.
Pamporovo was a bloody good place, we really wasn't too sure what to expect but we were very pleased with our holiday.
Transfer from Plovdiv is about 1.5 hours, I think it's about 4 from Sofia, watch out if you're flying in and out of there as the airport can be closed for fog.
We were on an accomodation on arrival and we were put in the 3 star Zora, a 5 minute walk from the bus and a bit further for the bright lights of the White Hart. The hotel didn;t have facilities such as a swimming pool, but frankly after a long day on the slopes, all I wanted was a hot shower, comfortable bed and plenty of cold beer, they had all here... The food was not too bad. we had planned to go outfor dinner for a few nights but as we had good company, we didn;t feel the need.
We went with Inghams and the rep Maria was very good with any questions or requests anyone had. I didn;t hear any complaints whilst I was thereat all.
We had a learn to board package which was great vaule, 99 quid for lessons, gear and lift pass. DO make sure you sort out our lift pass before you get to the resort as it will cost 42 lev a day (2.6 lev / £ ) If you board, go to the Snow Shack which is near the lifts, Gary and Ted are very knowledgable and friendly, and even if you aren't going to be boarding, I would imagine that they would be happy to help anyone, so long as they have a creme egg for them ( apparently you can't get them out there!)
Changing money isn;t a problem. We got some Lev at Gatwick at a slighty poorer rate than the resort. Most places will take sterling notes, but credit cards don't seem very popular, even in the shops. Ther are plenty of ATM's
Erm.... Good reports of food out side of the hotels, we ate lunch up the mountain, we liked the Lodge at the top.
We left our gear at the Ski depot, by the lifts every day, and it was fine. Busses go to the lifts from about 8 to 10:30 and back from 3 to 5:30. If you're outside this time a cab will cost 10 levs. less, no doubt if you look local!
Helen, I didn;t go into Hotel Pamporova, but from the ooutside it looks very nice. I bit of a walk from the centre, but not too far.
Skidooing was popular £20 a go.
Private boarding lessons at the Snowshack were great fun, and good value at about 15£ for a couple of hours. Cheers Ted
The White Hart is the main apre ski place to go. Beer is still only a pound a pint, and if you are really unlucky you could be roped in to Kareoke, although you'll be pleased to know that you missed my fine rendition of "I'm too Sexy..." by a week or more, I still am wearing the mental scars myself...
If you are learning to board for the first time, bruises are free, you'd be better to do it in the soft new snow, and not the hard stuff like we had. In saying that, we had a few days of snow for the second half of the week which was great.
Dont expect lots of runs, 25km of piste can be done in a easy day. But then if you did this, you'd be missing out on the laid back approach of the resort. The local people were all nice and pleased to see you and help where they could.
