Pamps 12 years on.

Just returned home after a week in Pamporovo. Last visited for our first and only other skiing trip 12 years ago when we stayed in Malina Village. This time stayed in Finlandia.

My observations are this:

When we went in early 90's it was for a cheap try at Skiing. The skiing was great and the instructors fantastic. The infrastructure was pretty poor with frequent power cuts and some of the worst food ever (after a week of eating eggs I began to fantasise about Macdonalds!!). The fact ...

The fact remained though that it was very cheap so it was good value, especially as a beginner.

This last week has been a strange one. The hotel was fantastic with good food, friendly staff and a warm, clean room. The infrastructure is better now with the lifts being more reliable and the runs were pisted when possible. The bus service was also good. We had a great holiday as a whole with one massive reservation. When the weather started to effect the slopes nobody seemed to take into account the huge safety issues. The run from the ski pick up to the 3 man chair lift was absolutely lethal. This could have been easily remedied by gritting a path for people to walk down. We saw three serious accidents in this area, which were unforgivable as they were totally predictable.

I remembered those lessons from 12 years ago and the intermediate class was fine. My son who was 9 and a beginner was parallel skiing by the end and I was able to take him down a couple of red runs (safer than the greens in the end!) my wife however was freaked out by the whole ice thing as were a lot of her beginners group. The green from the four man lift down should have been closed completely on the last day as there was no snow at all only rutted ice.

So in conclusion Pamporovo has moved on in many ways but the frontier spirit still remains when it comes to health and safety. It is still relatively cheap but not as the bell sellers say "cheap as chips" in which case the safety of its economic lifeblood should be a bit better organised.

Richard

I was in Pamporovo in 1994 and also stopped in the Malina Village.

We had a fantastic time and I often think of returning, but am now addicted to Borovets. This will be our 5th year in a row.

I've got Photos that might be of interest to you at
