Just got back from picking a regular customer up from Heathrow. Got to chatting about Bulgaria, she goes to Sofia on business from time to time. She related this tale to me of her first time into Sofia a couple of years back.
Arrived late night and was staying at the Holiday inn on a Business Park on the outskirts. They arranged for a driver to pick her up from airport. On the way out to the hotel general chit chat etc then he pipes up"Police wait around here, if they stop us you must pay ...

Just got back from picking a regular customer up from Heathrow. Got to chatting about Bulgaria, she goes to Sofia on business from time to time. She related this tale to me of her first time into Sofia a couple of years back.
Arrived late night and was staying at the Holiday inn on a Business Park on the outskirts. They arranged for a driver to pick her up from airport. On the way out to the hotel general chit chat etc then he pipes up"Police wait around here, if they stop us you must pay them"
Now she was a little taken aback never having been to eastern Europe before and was not sure what he meant. Well suprise,suprise within minutes the Police pulled the taxi. Had a conflab with driver then asked for her passport and keapt asking her questions. So eventually she realises that she has to pay and not having Levs she gives him.......50Euros!!
Now to me this sounds like a nice scam between the cabby and Police, has anyone had any experiance or heard of this?

Might have gone on a few years ago Dan, but unlikely now, since one copper got filmed accepting a bribe
in Sofia. The traffic police i must admit are not to bad in Sofia, they definitely know the law, and generally speak English... and lets be honest, they are up against it with the standard of driving here.....Now the provincial areas, Mmmmmm, that's a different story

We got fined on the main road to Greece - 'Put 50 lev in your passport' type of fine - and be on your way!re: Police Corruption
