I have been told never to talk to the Bulgarian Police, not even to ask directions as they will give you hassle.

True. My mate asked directions to the happy end bar and was fined 500 leva for wasting police time. When he refused to pay he was imprisoned for 8 years. It was an absolute nightmare. Then he woke up.
