re: Prices in Bansko

If my memory serves me correctly my wife and myself were paying about 45-50 lev for a meal for 2 and a couple of beers in the local mehana's last year. We stayed away from anywhere that attempted to claim it was a Brit Bar.
There are 7 of us going this year because I told them how cheap it was last year. I hope I haven't been telling them porkies.

Imported beers are much more and to be honest whnen you go on holiday you should be trying the local drinks irstly for a change and secondly its vastly cheaper.

With meals it does pretty much depend on what you have - the best "filling " meal is the hot plate full of meat and potatoes Seche

I always stick to the local beer to, I also say out of anywhere that classes itself as a Irish/English pub.

Exactly - however if there is a sporting event then I will have to go where there is sky TV and will happily pay the premium.

Local beers are really good - the Zagorka & Zogorka Gold are really strong, Kiminitza in 4% and you can drink it all day long and it is one of the few beers which gives me no hangover but takes gallons to get drunk, the local Pirin beer is fine too much stronger than Kiminitza and much cheaper BUT it does smell of raw meat if draft and this is how it should be it ...

Also for Brits here you should try the Rakia's in the small family run/old resteraunts most are home made and taste ok but will blow off your head try 90%+.... Booze

I found a few bar/restuarants in Bansko last year that had sky tv that appeared to be run by local.

Amnesia's still there.

Dec07 - We found we were spending about 35 lev (not inc the alcohol) on a meal for two - either starters and mains or mains and desserts and coffees (can't refuse a creme caramel myself) in the mehanas. Beers under 2 lev, and wine - well, however fancy you want to get!

I really did not think it was much, if any, more expensive than the previous year - the more 'English' pubs I think are more expensive - not too sure didn't frequent them - but the mehanas barely ...

re: Prices in Bansko

exactly locals will not be drinking in British/irish pubs as they cannot afford the price go to a Mehana bottle or 2 of wine and a starter & main.

Have you all noticed that in Bulgaria they often do not bring out meals together and sometimes bring out the main whileyour still having your starter, I guess they bring it out when its ready. It doesnt bother me one bit kind of quirky but when we first went for a meal I waited 15 mins with my starter before the Mrs was delivered mine stone ...

Another thing I dont think anyone really needs a 3 course meal in Bulgaria as a sarter & main or main & desert are more than enough for me & Im pretty big.

Yep the servings are pretty generous, and the food hearty.

And my other tip - if you really can't deal with the food not as hot as you are used to, order any of the meals that are served on the ceramic hotplates, sizzling away in front of you, they are hot enough for sure, not to mention super tasty and a bargain!

Sterling is in freefall against the Lev at the moment. Down 12% since end of July.
