A Roma family has settled illegally in the house of an English family in the village of Gostilitza, Gabrovo District. The English owners are not in Bulgaria and have no idea that their home has been occupied.
The Roma are unemployed, do not pay utility bills and receive food on credit from the local grocery store.
The mayor of the mountain village has been trying to solve the problem for months without any success, Bulgarian National Television reported.
Locals called the police when the Roma settled in the house four months ago. But officers replied they needed a petition from the home's legal owners to take action.
The squatters, however, see no problem with their actions, merely saying that the house is empty and the winter is a bad time to relocate.
Since they have received no help from police, locals hope that the unwanted settlers will vacate the property in the spring. They fear they will look irresponsible if the Roma are still there when the English owners arrive.
