Rent from Hunters or bring my 11/12yr old Viper Xs

Hi (again),

I am coming to Borovets in March for our first (kid enforced) trip for 10 years. I have some Rossignol Viper X 9.3 skis which I am not sure about using. They are about 11/12 years old and not been used that much.

Having not skied for so long I've no idea if current rental carvers are likely to be loads better or if my skis are still worth bringing and won't cause me to be laughed off the slopes as if I had a pair of scaffold boards on my feet.

The skis are about 190 long, I am about 180cm tall - again no idea what the recommended ski length is now. I am an intermediate skier but the only skiing I have done in 10 years was a few runs down a local hill in the heavy snow we had in the UK last Jan so rusty to say the least!

As the topic title says we will be renting plenty of kit for the kids from Hunters anyway.

Is it worth lugging them out?

Whilst I am thinking of it, we understand everyone in the alps wears helmets now - is this the same in Bulgaria?

Cheers

Jez,

Have you found out if it costs extra to check Skis into the hold?

I am flying with balkan and its an extra £29 or something like that. So we decided just to rent gear (apart from one awkward so and so) because we only saved £8 if we took our own! For us it wasnt worth the hassle of cramming more stuff in the taxi, and risk getting the Skis damaged on the plane for the sake of £8.

It is not a requirement to wear a lid, however I have been advised to, and I will be this season ...

Hope this is of some help.

As long as the skis are in good nick i.e. edges etc they will be OK. Skiid on my old solomon skis till last year and they were still good.If the edges nead doing a quick service in boro for a few quid will see them right.

It will cost £18 to put skis on plane. We're doing a family ski pack with Hunters so essentially I've paid for hire. I will be bringing my own boots cos I know they fit OK but what's really driving my question is if skis (esp rental ones) are so much better now that I will likely get on with more recent rental skis.

For example, I know that the side cut is more pronouncetd on newer skis which should help turning. Is a 190cm (ish) ski still a typical length for my height and ability?

Hi Jez,

Ok, don't shoot me down as this is from Bobby (!) - he recommends you nail your vipers against the wall or put them in the bin...!! Only joking, but he recommends for your height, you should be on 165cm, max 170 now on carving ski's and as such, they're probably not worth the carriage over...
