I was staying at Hotel Samokov from 8 Feb to 15 Feb. We arrived at the hotel at about 10pm. The room was clean but a little bit old. The bath tub was blocked so I had to ask staff to clear it. I found the breakfast was alright for me and lots of choice. Dinner was hot and alright. Many ppl in this forum said the food was cold and I believe it depends on time. I always had dinner at 6 which the buffet just started. The food was hot. Yesterday I went there at 8, I could feel the food is a ...

It was the first time for me to ski, the Samokov ski school was excellent. There were about 8 ppl in our group. On the first two days we were on the nursery slope outside Rila. On the third day, we went up the gondola to the top of the mountain. The snow condition at the bottom wasn't really good, icy. However, the snow was excellent at the top. Todor was our ski instructor who had skied for 25 years, he was speaking english well. I just can't believe I can ski down to the mid station from the top on the last day. I think ppl going this week should have better snow but should wear more clothes.
The exchange rate was 2.12 yesterday from the bank at the basement of Hotel Samokov which I found the best.
For restaurant, I would recommend Green King and the 'Pizza' on the downhill side of Hotel Samokov...
hey calvin,
You also took lessons at the samokov school.
we 'll have the same next week 21-28 feb.
Borogirl wrote that school starts at 10, that's great.
But around noon, do you have a break to eat whereever you want?
How is the ski material?
You will stop for an hour or so and it is up to you if or where you eat. Your instructor will try and encourage you to eat wherever he has been told to take you but do your own thing. If you are skiing on the top, the prices are higher, so check before ordering anything. Many have been buying snacks in the supermarket and taking drinks with them, especially if they are skiing at the top of the gondola.
There are many suggestions on here as to places to try or avoid
As Borogirl said, there was a lunch break lasted for around an hour. The instructor encouraged us to eat together. However, there was no specific time for the break, sometimes at noon, sometimes at 2. It depends on the group and weather. It was funny that most of the ppl in our group were not hungry to have lunch, so most of us just ordered drinks during breaks. I think it was because we were keeping too concentrated on skiing. I believe you will not feel hungry during the lesson. The price of the food at the top is about double of that at the bottom. 6 levs for a plate of chips compared to 2.5levs. U have to pay 1 lev for toilet at the top and on one of the days we spent there, restaurant toilets were broken, we hv to travel back to the gondola station for it which is very tiring without the moving carpet as it was too windy. I advise you to bring some snacks and a small bottle of water when u go to the top. Remember your camera, it was fantastic the view!!! You will be above the clouds!!
Ben, the instruction was quite good, it usually lasts more than 4 hrs excluding the break. I don't know what you mean 'ski material'. The ski was heavy so as the boots. The boots were hurting me especially to my shin. It was difficult to walk with them. I believe it is very common for beginner. I would also suggest you to get some ibuprofen gel and painkiller there.
